The stage is set for a cracking edition of the $1 million Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes st Flemington on Saturday in an edition that sees a clash of the generations with established star Giga Kick taking on a high-powered wave of three-year-olds led by Tentyris and Beiwacht.
A small but elite field of eight assembles and seven of the field have not appeared since at least November last year. Five of the eight are three-year-olds — the two Godolphin colts, Tentyris and Beiwacht, alongside the fillies Marhoona, My Gladiola and outsider Military Tycoon. The seasoned trio is headed by Giga Kick, with Group 1 talent Baraqiel and last year’s placegetter Benedetta bringing the hardened WFA form.
Tentyris returns as the boom colt after winning the spring feature race for the three-year-old sprinters, the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) up the Flemington straight. He has class and upside, but first-up sharpness is the only knock, and the market has him priced as though he’s already the finished product.
Giga Kick is the proven fresh weapon and brings the benchmark profile you want in a Lightning. He went more than 14 lenghts faster than standard benchmark when winning fresh over 1100m at Caulfield last campaign, then backed it up by winning the Champions Sprint (1200m) down the Flemington straight. The Clayton Douglas-trained galloper took out a recent trial that included My Gladiola, adding another tick that he’s returned in the right order.
My Gladiola is a genuine straight-track reference. She defeated Tentyris in the Danehill Stakes (1100m) at Flemington when third-up, producing a figure of (14.4) faster than standard benchmark. Tentyris may have been a bit underdone and was returning from injury that day, while My Gladiola was on the grandstand side, often an advantage at headquarters.
Beiwacht is the X-factor at the price. His Golden Rose win over 1400m last spring came off a performance of (14) faster than standard benchmark — an explosive, top-shelf number. The query is whether his absolute best is over further, but he’s trialled well and the stable intent is clear: Waller and Godolphin have sent him to Melbourne specifically to learn the Flemington straight ahead of the Newmarket and potential overseas travel.
Marhoona adds another three-year-old layer of quality, Baraqiel brings Group 1 seasoning and tactical speed, Benedetta has straight-track and Lightning history on her side, and Military Tycoon ($81) is a last-start 1100m fillies grade runner-up who faces a steep rise in class.
Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Speed Map
This profiles as good-to-fast speed, and with so many resuming, the tempo and lanes down the straight will be decisive.
Beiwacht (3) looks the most likely to roll forward and either lead or sit right on the speed, potentially outside Military Tycoon (2) if the outsider pushes up. Marhoona (4) and Baraqiel (5) both map as natural forward runners — the types that can apply pressure and ensure this is genuinely run rather than turning into a sit-and-sprint.
Giga Kick (6) and Tentyris (7) have landed the sweet spot barriers and should be stalking in clear air in the preferred lanes, close enough to strike without doing the early work. An interesting tactical wrinkle will be where Giga Kick settles drawn slightly inside Tentyris, but either way both should get every chance to build and launch from the 400m.
My Gladiola (8) likely finds cover and looks to peel into the race late, while Benedetta (1) and any backmarkers will want the leaders to commit hard so the closing splits become relevant.
Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Best Bet
I am a massive fan of Tentyris but it is Giga Kick that gets the nod on the back of his first up win last spring, which was then validated it at the absolute top level by winning the Champions Sprint (1200m) down the Flemington straight. From barrier 6 he maps to stalk the genuine speed, land in the right lane and launch when the race opens from the 400m. If Tentyris is as good as the market says, Giga Kick still gets every chance to beat him on race-day hardness and proven first-up output.
Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Best Value
Beiwacht is the best value because he brings the ceiling figure, the right map, and a clear stable plan built around straight-track speed. Waller claimed this race with Home Affairs as a three-year-old a few years back and the Flemington straight could be the perfect place for the high-cruising colt if he’s allowed to roll into rhythm and sustain. He maps to lead or sit right on the speed from barrier 3 in what could be a prime set-up.
