The Australian Guineas is a Group 1 event for three-year-olds run over 1600m at Flemington racecourse at set weights.

The race was first run in 1986 and has been won by some fantastic middle distance horses including Mahogany (1994), Apache Cat (2006) and Alligator Blood (2020).

Another cracking field has been assembled this Saturday and our thoughts and betting plays can be found below.

1. Goldrush Guru

The 2024 Victoria Derby winner has had two starts this campaign leading into this event and while both have been below par, they were at unsuitable distances.

This is still short of his preferred distance but he will be much fitter with the two runs under his belt and we know he is up to this level of racing.

2. Savaglee

Won the Group 1 2000 Guineas back in November over 1600m in a streak that saw him win four races in a row.

The son of Savabeel won at Group 2 level first up and then finished third behind the older horses second up.

Will be nearing peak fitness for his Australian racing debut.

3. Feroce

A consistent performer who was beaten by the barest of margins in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas during the spring.

Was no match for Sepals first up in the C.S Hayes Stakes but made up plenty of ground late to finish third.

He’s a horse with a heap of upside and is one of the leading contenders.

4. Angel Capital

Burst into favourtism for this event with a dominant win when resuming in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes at Caulfield over 1400m.

The son of Harry Angel will be better suited over 1600m and is shooting for his fifth win at just start eight.

5. Henlein

Closed out his last campaign with a second in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick proving he is capable at the highest level of racing.

Was disappointing first up when beaten by over eight lengths at Flemington but he’ll take plenty of improvement out of the run stepping up in distance.

6. Red Aces

Took out the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase last spring and failed to see out the distance in the Derby.

Another that was well beaten in the C.S Hayes first up and would need to improve dramatically to have any chance here.

7. Point And Shoot

A progressive type who has been working through the grades this campaign to earn a crack at Group 1 glory.

Demolished his rivals by over five length in the benchmark 72 two starts back and was huge when blowing the start at Randwick last time out but still finding a way to win.

8. Stay Focused

Has competed well in some pretty handy races throughout his career but has just one win from eight starts.

Started over 1400m for the first time in the C.S Hayes and was found wanting late which suggests the step up in distance for this event is not ideal.

9. Opening Address

Won a Listed race here at headquarters over 1800m at the end of his spring campaign which was the second of the prep.

Disappointing first up although he had excuses.

10. Ndola

Another that was well beaten behind Sepals first up but made up considerable ground late to finish second.

The son of Justify is going to need a big peak performance to turn the tables on that horse but these young horses can take giant steps forward between runs.

11. Royal Insignia

Closed out his spring campaign with back to back win including one here at Caulfield over 1200m.

Beat Tropicus first up in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes who has since come out and won so that form may be worth noting.

12. Sepals

Started this campaign back in December when he was beaten in a maiden at Yarra Glen but connections have changed course after three wins on the trot.

None were more impressive than his dominant win in the C.S Hayes two weeks ago and he meets many of those same horses at the same weight scale.

Drawn perfectly and deserves to be the starting point for doing the form for this race.

13. Savour The Dream

Came from last to storm over his rivals and win at Eagle Farm back in December and then had seven weeks in between runs where he scored again at Doomben.

He’s a colt with a sharp turn of foot and with the right run in transit he can do his best work late in the race.

14. Detroit City

Started his racing career with two wins from as many starts but has failed to place since.

Not the worst but will need luck from that barrier in a big field.

15. Plymouth

Mike Moroney and Craig Williams team up with this son of The Autumn Sun who comes into this contest on the back of a second behind Angel Capital.

Is that the right form? He’ll get a nice run in transit from barrier four.

16. Another Prophet

The first filly in the race and she has won the second most amount of prize money in the race thanks mainly to her win in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas.

She beat a very smart filly in Aeliana in that race and has earned a shot against the boys at the top level.

Barrier doesn’t help her chances.
