The Surround Stakes is run over 1400m at Royal Randwick for three-year-old fillies at set weights.

The Group 1 event was first run in 1979 and has been won by some very good fillies including Gold Edition (2007), More Joyous (2010) and Probabeel (2020).

My thoughts on every runner are below and my top four selections included.

1. Lady Shenandoah

Closed out her spring campaign with back to back wins including the Group 1 Flight Stakes over 1600m here at Randwick.

Proved herself one of the best fillies in the country when dominating her rivals first up in the Light Fingers and she’s the deserving favourite.

2. Lady Of Camelot

Won the Golden Slipper this time last year and while she currently joins the long list of horses to have won the race and never won again, she has been placed in five of her last seven since that Group 1 win.

She was beaten less than a length in the Moir Stakes against the older horse in the spring as well as finishing third in the Coolmore Stud Stakes.

This is her first start over 1400m but she’s drawn to get a nice run in transit.

3. Manaal

Narrowly beaten by Ameena over 1200m to kick start last campaign but turned the tables in the Furious Stakes one start later.

Made up plenty of ground late when resuming behind Lady Shanandoah but still finished over four lengths behind her.

4. Movin Out

Broke her maiden in New Zealand at start two back in November before placing in the Group 1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas.

This will be her first start in Australia but there’s no doubt she’ll be a bigger and stronger filly in just her second racing prep.

5. Powers Of Opal

Worked through the grades really well last campaign and was runner up in both the Wakeful and Victorian Oaks to close out her spring.

The daughter of Ocean Park will be using this race as a starting point toward the Oaks but she has a fair amount of class and will be running on late.

6. Lilac

Won the Listed Jim Moloney Stakes at Caulfield over 1400m at the end of the spring which had her connections excited about more black type victories.

Raced wide without cover in a benchmark 72 first up where she finished fourth but put in an improved performance when third in the Light Fingers second up.

7. Lazzura

Chris Waller and Tommy Berry combine with this daughter of Snitzel who is shooting for her third win at start seven.

She has failed to win since her two-year-old season but hasn’t been far away in every start she’s contested including three lengths off the winner in the Light Fingers first up.

8. More Territories

Five of her seven career starts have been in stakes grade but her two wins have been her maiden win on debut and a benchmark 78 when resuming this campaign.

There is no doubt she has ability at this level because she is never far away in her races and she may be starting to work it all out and reach her peak now.

9. Amelita

Broke her maiden at Canterbury when fresh last campaign and closed out that campaign with a huge win in the Group 3 Red Roses at Flemington where she showed a devastating turn of foot over 1100m.

Was far from disgraced in the Light Fingers where she weaved through the field and did her best work late.

10. Castanya

Won the Listed Lonhro Plate as a two-year-old but is another that comes through the Light Fingers and will need to improve to turn the tables on the winner.

11. Declichy Boulevard

Placed in all three runs during her spring campaign including a narrow second to Too Darn Discreet in the Group Edward Manifold.

Jumped a bit awkward first up but has scope for improvement now.

12. Husk

Fitness won’t be an issue for this Hawkes trained filly as she has her fifth run this campaign.

Was just pipped in the Listed Desirable Stakes at Flemington last time out and she brings in different form lines.

13. Dominetta

Placed in both the Group 3 Reginald Allen and Vanity during the spring and then finished three lengths off the winner in the Thousand Guineas.

Has had two solid trials leading into this first up assignment.

14. Idle Flyer

Daughter of Dundeel who has won three of her five career starts including her last two in a row.

She only won a benchmark 68 by half a length last time out but they beat home the third horse by six lengths.

15.Island Dec

Another lightly raced filly who has won three of five and is stepping up dramatically in grade.

There’s no knocking winning form and if she can continue to take big steps in grade, there’s no reason she can’t feature.
