The Group 1 Australian Cup has for a long time been considered the pinnacle of the autumn racing carnival in Melbourne and is rich in history.

Some of our best middle distance weight-for-age horses have won the race and we have another excellent field of horses assembled for the 2024 edition.

We’ve taken a look back at the history of the race, looking at the facts and figures, to try and find the winner for you below. You can also read our Australian Cup tips and runner-by-runner guide.

Six  horses have won the race twice and five have managed to win the race in back to back years.

The most recent was Harlem in 2019/19 and the most well known being Vo Rogue who won the race in both 1989 and 1990.

Boys Club

Mares have had a horrendous time of it in the Australian Cup in recent times with only two females saluting in the race since Dane Ripper won in 1998.

Makybe Diva won the race in 2005, a year to remember for the champion mare, and Duais won in 2022.
Three mares line up in the race this year, Pride Of Jenni, Atishu and Legarto.

Not The Favourite

One of the most thrilling performances of all time came when Darren Beadman lifted the champion Lonhro out of a pocket to get the short priced favourite home in the 2004 Australian Cup.

Since then, only three favourites have won the race.

Fiorente in 2014, Humidor in 2017 and Cascadian last year.

Melbourne Cup Form Guide

A lot of trainers have taken a similar pathway when it comes to the Australian Cup in the past whereby they give their staying horses a short, sharp autumn campaign with this race as their target.

Melbourne Cup winners to win this race during a ‘soft’ autumn campaign include Hyperno, Let’s Elope, Saintly, Maybe Diva, Shocking and Fiorente.
