The Group 1 Surround Stakes is run over 1400m at Royal Randwick for three-year-old fillies at set weights.

First run in 1979, some very good fillies have won the race including Gold Edition (2007), More Joyous (2010) and Probabeel (2020).

We’ve taken a look at every runner in what is a very open event below with the best odds available from BoomBet.

1. Tropical Squall (2)

The 2023 Group 1 Flight Stakes winner comes into the race first up from a spell but has had two solid trials leading in.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained daughter of Prized Icon was well beaten in the VRC Oaks to close out her spring campaign but it was the end of a big prep.

There is no doubting her ability and she’s drawn to get a lovely run in transit from barrier two.

2. Zardozi (10)

A very progressive type of filly who only got better the deeper she got into her spring campaign.

She took out the Group 2 Edward Manifold at Flemington over 1600m proving her versatility and then of course went on to score a dominate win in the VRC Oaks.

Has come up a huge price considering she is already a Group 1 winner and although she may find them a bit sharp, I wouldn’t be surprised if she featured in the finish.

3. Kimochi (7)

This is a very even bunch of middle distance and sprinting fillies and Kimochi has proven she can mix it with them.

She has placed at Group 1 level on two occasions including a second in the Thousand Guineas and returned from a spell in winning fashion in the Light Fingers.

4. Learning To Fly (6)

Won her first three race starts, all in black type races, before losing the rider in the Golden Slipper this time last year.

Missed the spring but returned with a brave second in the Light Fingers when she just couldn’t reel in Kimochi.

This is her first go beyond 1200m but I don’t see an issue there.

5. Tiz Invincible (5)

Won her first three starts during the spring including the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes where she beat Kimochi by 1.5 lengths at this track and distance.

Was last on the turn in the Light Fingers but made up considerable ground late.

I’d like to see James McDonald get the daughter of I Am Invincible into a more forward position from the good draw and she’s one that represents great value at her current quote.

6. Kristilli (8)

Should have had a fitness edge on a few of the returning fillies in the Light Fingers where she finished third.

She is a talented filly but I have a few ahead of her at this level of racing.

7. Tutta La Vita (3)

Finished third behind Tropical Squall in the Flight Stakes and then took on the boys in the Spring Champion where she was beaten 4.7 lengths behind Tom Kitten.

This is short of her preferred distance but she’s had three trials leading in and has drawn perfectly in barrier three.

8. Makarena (13)

Is yet to finish outside the top two in four career race starts and she closed out her last campaign with back to back wins.

Was beaten a length first up over 1200m here at Randwick and with natural improvement and race experience she will only be better.

9. Autumn Ballet (4)

Hard to doubt the Waterhouse stable at the moment and she has been competitive in some good races in the past.

She faded to finished four lengths off the winner first up but the blinkers go back on to sharpen her up.

10. Roll On High (11)

A progressive type out of the Peter Moody stable who won her maiden at Pakenham by 3.5 lengths in October before closing out the campaign with a black type win over 1400m.

Will need to take another leap forward but is in the right stable to do so.

11. Arctic Glamour (9)

I thought this filly was enormous first up in the Light Fingers having been last at the 350m.

She was absolutely flying late and with some pace on up front, she can do the same thing again with luck.

12. Stefi Magnetica (1)

Won a benchmark 58 at Orange to start this prep but has continued to perform as she sips through the grades.

Got her chance in black type company last start and was far from disgraced and although she’ll need to step up again, she seems very progressive.

13. Kind Words (12)

Closed out her last campaign with a second in the Spring Stakes behind Genzano at Group 3 level over 1600m.

Was no match for them first up and would need to turn things around dramatically to be any chance.
