Robert Sangster Stakes Tips - Predictions and analysis for the Morphettville Group 1

The Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes is the feature race at Morphettville this weekend and is run over 1200m for fillies and mares at weight-for-age.
The race was first run in 1983 and has been won by some great locals and champion inter state horses including Alinghi (2005), Black Caviar (2012) and Shoals (2018).
Another excellent field has accepted this year and we’ve gone through every runner below.
1. Zapateo (3)
Zapateo was excellent in defeat in her first two starts this campaign at Caulfield and Randwick before breaking through for her maiden Group 1 victory in The Galaxy at Rosehill.
She came to Adelaide this time last year and finished third in both this race as well as the Goodwood and she’s going better 12 months later.
Drawn perfectly in barrier three and loses nothing with Jamie Kah jumping aboard.
2. I Am Me (2)
Closed out last campaign with a Group 2 win at Randwick and then was placed twice at Group 1 level including a second behind Imperatriz in the Manikato Stakes.
Kick started this campaign with a third behind that same mare at The Valley at Group 1 level and has had a month in between runs heading into this assignment.
This looks a perfect grade for her and she’s drawn to get a lovely run in transit from barrier two.
3. Passive Aggressive (6)
Produced the sixth win of her short career at just her ninth start first up over 1000m at Group 2 level showing her turn quick turn of foot in a really good form race.
She then tackled the Group 1 Galaxy where she met many of those horses worse off at the weights and finished just over two lengths from the winner.
There’s no doubting she is better over the shorter distance but her class will take her a long way.
4. Benedetta (1)
Was rewarded for her incredible consistently when she scored her second Group 3 victory here at Morphettville two weeks ago over 1100m.
Her biggest losing margin in a race has been 1.8 lengths and she has managed to place in 10 of 13 career starts.
She’s won three times from five starts at 1200m and she is one of the leading contenders despite two starts at Group 1 level without a placing.
5. Roots (9)
A very progressive type of mare who is capable of producing a high rating performance on her day which was evident when she took out the Group 2 Hot Danish by 2.8 lengths during the spring.
Her first up run at Rosehill was full of merit where she finished just 1.7 lengths from the winner Bandi’s Boy at Group 3 level and she’ll take plenty of improvement out of that run.
She needs to be respected but I’m not convinced she’s up to winning a high quality Group 1 like this.
6. Skew Wiff (5)
Another high class, Group 1 winning mare who has struggled this autumn since arriving in Australia from New Zealand.
Her first up run at Caulfield was better than it looks on paper but her two subsequent runs have been poor.
7. Climbing Star (14)
Couldn’t have been much more impressive first up when scoring by 2.8 lengths here at Morphettville albeit in a much lower grade.
The daughter of Zoustar then stepped out in Group 3 grade and was beaten less then a half a length behind Benedetta.
Stepping back up to 1200m is an advantage and despite a tricky draw, she does look over the odds.
8. Lempicka (4)
Racing really well this campaign in lower grades and a narrow win at Caulfield was followed by a narrow defeat at headquarters.
This is a big step up in grade and although she has drawn well she looks tested under weight-for-age conditions.
9. Wonderful Tonight (12)
Was beaten 11 lengths at Group 1 level behind Bonny Lass in New Zealand but has bounced back with two good performances at Listed level since.
Her best form seems to be on a heavy track which I’m not sure she gets on Saturday.
10. Snapped (7)
The Freedman team send their lightly raced five-year-old mare over to Adelaide for a crack at Group 1 glory and she is a winner at this track and distance just two starts back.
She was beaten over two lengths by Benedetta last time out and it’s tough to see her turning the tables under these conditions.
11. Waltz On By (8)
This daughter of I Am Invincible has been a consistent performer for Peter Moody and she never seems to finish far from the winner in whatever she contests.
She was beaten less than a length first up over 1100m at Flemington and then scored an impressive win at Caulfield five weeks ago.
She’s been kept fresh and while this may be short of her ideal distance she’s one that is over the odds.
12. Estriella (11)
There might not be a more exciting filly in the country at the moment and she continues to step up to the plate at every challenge.
The Ciaron Maher trained three-year-old is shooting for her fourth consecutive win this campaign and although this is her first crack at Group 1 level she oozes class.
Mark Zahra will have his work cut out getting her to the front with plenty of pace drawn inside her but she’s one of the leading chances.
13. Learning To Fly (13)
There were plenty of wraps on this filly leading into this campaign but not everything has gone according to plan.
She was beaten by the barest of margins first up behind Kimochi and then was beaten just 1.8 lengths in the Group 1 Surround Stakes behind Tropical Squall.
The stable has kept her fresh for this but she does look outclassed against the older mares.
14. Stretan Angel (10)
The third filly in the race this year and she adds a bit of X factor to the field.
She beat the boys, including I Am Unstoppable, in the Group 2 Danehill during the autumn but was well beaten by Estriella first up over 1100m at Flemington this time in.
She’s capable of producing a high rating performance but she’d need to reach new heights to win a race of this quality.
