The Memsie Stakes is a Group 1 race run over 1400m at Caulfield under weight-for-age conditions and is the launching point for many horses during their spring campaign.

The race was first run in 1899 and has been some by some champion horses including Phar Lap (1931), Rising Fast (1956) and Makybe Diva (2005).

We’ve gone through every runner in this years race and offered our thoughts and top 4 betting selections below.

1. Mr Brightside (4)

The six-time Group 1 winner started his autumn campaign with back to back victories at Group 1 level at this track and distance.

The first of those wins was a narrow win over Pride Of Jenni in the C.F Orr Stakes and the second in the Futurity.

He is unbeaten in five runs over 1400m at Caulfield and it’s just a matter of how far Pride Of Jenni gets in front of him!

2. Aegon (1)

Had a luckless run when resuming in the P.B Lawrence at this track and distance but was beaten less than a length behind Gentleman Roy.

Failed to win in three starts in New Zealand over the summer but all three of those runs were at Group 1 level.

Three of his six career wins have been at 1400m and in a small field he can avoid trouble with luck.

3. Gentlemen Roy (8)

The eight-year-old gelding has had five tries at the top level for just one minor placing but there is no doubt he is racing better than ever right at the minute.

He comes into this race having won his last three in a row including a Group 2 last start at this track and distance.

Expect Mark Zahra to go and eyeball Pride Of Jenni in front but that is an incredible task knowing the sectionals she can rattle off.

4. Bandersnatch (2)

His winning strike rate is pretty good having won 10 times during his 47 start career but he is unplaced in eight goes in Group 1 races.

Can handle all surfaces but this may just be a level of racing that is above him if we are being honest.

5. Pinstriped (3)

Got to within two lengths of Mr Brightside in last year’s P.B Lawrence before going out and winning the Group 2 Feehan Stakes at The Valley.

He failed to recapture that form during his last campaign but he was beaten a narrow margin behind Gentleman Roy first up which may be a sign he’s back to his best.

6. Antino (6)

There’s no doubting this horse's ability when he puts it all together and he has managed 10 wins from just 17 starts during his short career none of which have been a Group 1.

He’ll love a rock hard track which he likely gets on Saturday and he has won four times from five first up runs.

His jump out leading into this first up assignment was very good as he went over the line with Pride Of Jenni and he does represent some value at his current price.

7. Pride Of Jenni (7)

Closed out an excellent autumn campaign when winning the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick but she won’t be getting a break on the pack ever again like she did that day after the backlash the jockeys copped that day.

Mr Brightside beat her first up last prep at this track and distance and while she is of course a winning chance, her best work is over a mile and beyond.

She won’t get it all her own way in front with Gentlemen Roy in the race but she will be your likely leader.

8. Vagrant (5)

Worked through the grades well during her last campaign where she won three in a row and captured a black type race at Caulfield.

Was beaten just over three lengths first up and has two wins from three goes second up.

Drawn well but this is a big step up in grade.
