The second Group 1 on Stradbroke Handicap day at Eagle Farm is the J.J Atkins for two-year-old’s run over 1600m.
First run as the Claret Stakes in 1893, the race has been won by some very goo juveniles, some of which went on to become superstars of the turf as older horses including Luskin Star (1977), Mahogany (1993) and The Autumn Sun (2018).
Another fantastic field of young horses has been assembled this year and we have gone through every one below.
1. Broadsiding (2)
The Godolphin colt comes into the final two-year-old Group 1 of the season having won his last three starts including his last at this track in impression fashion where he came from last.
Of course he is already a Group 1 winner at 1600m having taken out the Champagne Stakes at Royal Randwick in April on a heavy 10.
On exposed form he is by far the best rated horse in the race and he’ll again prove hard to beat with even luck.
2. Zouna (5)
Made his debut at Doomben March with a dominant 2.3 length win over 1110m proving he had a bright future.
Since then he’s won just once but has been competitive every time he’s gone to the races including a second behind Broadsiding last time out where he also made up a tonne of ground from the back of the field.
Drawn well and has to be considered.
3. Bittercreek (10)
Placed at Listed level in his first two starts and then won at Group 2 level at Doomben over 1200m beating Zouna in the process.
Did a lot of work early behind Broadsiding two weeks ago and it found him wanted a touch late in the race although he was beaten just over a length on the line.
Blinkers go back on he has been really well supported in early betting suggesting he’s here to win.
4. Beau Dazzler (14)
Won a Listed race at this track in just his second ever start but has failed to fire since.
Has shown nothing this campaign to suggest he’d be competitive in a race of this quality.
5. Can’t Recall One (11)
Won his first two starts by a combined 5.6 lengths and both were on the big Eagle Farm track.
Was well beaten first up and would need to improve dramatically to be any chance.
6. Imperialist (12)
Was well beaten in his first two starts at Canterbury and on the Kensington track but managed to knock off the favourite here at Eagle Farm last weekend.
He was 10th at the 800m in that race and showed an impressive turn of foot late in the race and the step up in distance will only suit him at this stage of his racing career.
7. Smashing Time (4)
Broke his maiden at start two in April at Kembla Grange and while he hasn’t won in two starts since, he’s been far from disgraced.
The son of Brave Smash was another of these juveniles that made up plenty of ground late Sires’ Produce at Eagle Farm two weeks ago and seems over the odds at his current price from a good draw in barrier four.
8. Bosustow (1)
Proved he is a talented individual when placing behind Traffic Warden at Group 2 level at Flemington back in March at just his second career start.
The team dropped him back in grade last start and he dominated his rivals to break his maiden and he looks ready to step up to a mile now.
9. Barbaric Lad (8)
Although he has just the one win to his name so far in his short racing career, he’s yet to put in a poor performance and continues to step up to every challenge given to him.
He’s proven on all surfaces and didn’t finish far away from Broadsiding two weeks ago although he’ll need to find another gear to beat that horse.
10. Mr Artemisia (3)
Has been placed in all three of his starts so far in his career but I love the way he savaged the line late at Rosehill two weeks ago over 1300m.
The son of The Autumn Sun, a winner of this very race, will relish the step up to 1600m now and he’s drawn to get a lovely run in transit from barrier three.
11. China Sea (9)
Won on debut at Kembla Grange impressively but this is a big ask to jump to Group 1 level against some hardened juveniles at start two.
12. El Morzilo (7)
Was beaten half a length behind Bittercreek at Group 2 level two back but the grey filly was then found wanting late behind Broadsiding last start.
My concern is that she runs out a strong 1600m but she should be plenty fit.
13. Aemelius (6)
Was impressive when winning at Randwick two starts back triggered Anable Neasham to send her to Queensland for the winter.
She was really well supported in betting last Saturday but just tended to lay out in the straight which cost her a bit of momentum.
It was still a really good performance in my opinion and I love the quick back up.
14. Pee Bee Noir (13)
Hasn’t looked likely in two career starts and this is a big ask at start three.
