The Golden Rose is run over 1400m at Rosehill racecourse for three-year-old at set weights and is worth $1 million in prize money.
The Group 1 event was first run in 1978 as the Peter Pan Stakes and has been won by some champion young horses including Kingston Town (1979), Forensics (2008) and The Autumn Sun (2018).
Another excellent field has been assembled in 2024 and below is a comprehensive look at each runner along with our top four selections.
1. Broadsiding (1)
Won the last four starts of his two-year-old season including the Group 1 J.J Atkins at Eagle Farm by over four lengths.
He’s had two nice trials leading into this first up assignment and although others have fitness on their side, his class will take him a long way.
2. Traffic Warden (9)
Finished two lengths off the winner in the Golden Slipper and then was beaten a lip in the Inglis Sires’ over 1400m during the autumn.
He’s clearly come back well as evident by his first up win in the Run To The Rose and he will only improve on what he did fresh.
3. Storm Boy (11)
Has promised the world and delivered an atlas during his short racing career and his biggest win came in the Magic Millions in what has proven to be a pretty ordinary form race.
Was dominant first up here at Rosehill but again the horses he beat are pretty suspect and he has managed a third from two starts at Group 1 level.
4. Linebacker (7)
Closed out his last campaign with a second placing behind Broadsiding in the Champagne Stakes on a heavy 10 at Randwick.
Had his mind on the fillies before his first up start in the Run To The Rose but he made up a huge amount of ground late in the race to finish within lengths of the winner Traffic Warden.
5. Anode (10)
Was well beaten in both the Sires’ and Champagne last campaign but proved he has come back a better colt when narrowly denied in the Run To The Rose first up.
Tim Clark may take him to the front in this but I’m not sure he’ll appreciate a rain affected track.
6. Fearless (2)
Has placed three times in seven career starts including a third behind Broadsiding in the Champagne Stakes.
Just not up to this level of racing.
7. Mayfair (5)
Is yet to miss the top two in four career starts and was beaten by a narrow margin at Group 3 level last time out.
Will be nearing peak fitness but is another that may be out of his depth at this stage of his career.
8. Emirate (3)
Chris Waller trained colt who won his first two race starts on rain affected tracks during the autumn.
Was no match for them in the Run To The Rose but was far from disgraced and will improve into this assignment from barrier three.
9. Tropicus (6)
Finished over three lengths behind Storm Boy first up and would need to improve dramatically to turn the tables.
10. Clear Proof (8)
Finished second in a listed event first up and had to be pulled up at his next start.
Fair amount of trust involved if you were to have something on in this race.
11. Daggers (4)
Won his first two starts by a combined six lengths at Sandown and The Valley and wasn’t beaten far at headquarters last time out.
Big price but does bring in a different form line to the others.
