The Black Caviar Lightning Stakes is run over 1000m down the famous Flemington straight track under weight-for-age conditions.
The Group 1 race was first run in 1955 and has been won by some champion race horses including Schillaci (1992,93), Black Caviar (2011,12,13) and Nature Strip (2021).
We have run through every single runner below and offered our betting plays with odds from Diamondbet.
1. Private Eye (8)
The Joe Pride trained sprinter is edging toward $10 million is prize money this campaign and is aiming for his 12th win from 31 career race starts.
The now six year-old gelding has won four times from eight first up runs including a win at Group 2 level to kick start his spring campaign which culminated in a narrow defeat in The Everest.
He’s never won over 1000m and has been unplaced in three of his four starts here at Flemington.
2. The Astrologist (7)
Has been somewhat of a jetsetter in recent times, travelling around the world in search of prize money but it has been a while in between wins for the seven year-old.
He loves the straight track here at Flemington and is never far away despite never winning at the track and distance.
Has had 10 attempts at Group 1 level for just two placings but he has the added benefit of fitness, this being his third run this prep.
3. Bella Nipotina (6)
One of the most consistent sprinting mares in the country which is evident by her six placings in her last eight race starts.
She beat both Private Eye and Think About it during her last campaign and those two horses had just quinella’d The Everest.
Never won at headquarters and it usually takes her a run or two to get into her prep but I wouldn’t discount this mare in the form she is in.
4. Imperatriz (2)
The only knock on this mare during her last campaign is that she was taking on the second rate horses in Melbourne while the A-Graders battled it out in Sydney.
She put that argument to bed when winning the VRC Classic at the end of the spring carnival albeit only by half a length.
Three Group 1 wins in row and eight in total, there is no doubting her class and while she is the deserving favourite her trials have been only plain leading into this first up assignment.
5. Espiona (4)
Another top quality sprinting mare who has an excellent winning record with seven wins from 18 career starts.
She has performed better against her own sex and the 1000m might be a little sharp for her first up however look for her flashing late like she did when beaten just two lengths behind Imperatriz in the VRC Classic.
6. Rich Fortune (1)
Yet to win so far this campaign in much easier grade and nothing to suggest she’ll be competitive in a race of this quality.
7. Cylinder (5)
Put together back to back wins to kick start his last campaign and then was narrowly denied in the Group 1 Golden Rose behind Militarise.
He proved that he is a talented colt when mixing it with the older sprinters and was beaten just over a length in The Everest.
Gets his chance to increase his value as a stallion but I’m not sure he’s suited by the weight scale.
8. I Am Unstoppable (3)
Has failed to win during his three-year-old season so far but has still amassed also $600k in prize money and was placed in all four runs last campaign.
The son of I Am Invincible is a professional and knows exactly why he is at the races which is evident in his consistency.
Seems to thrive down the Flemington straight and in a small field, he’ll have every chance.
