- Blackbook picks out the four best bets
Flemington racing takes place on Saturday, February 17, with the 10-race program on Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Day.
We have the best bets picked out from across day with value selections for Flemington Racecourse including for the feature Black Caviar Lightning Stakes.
Race 5: No. 3 Wishlor Lass
A lightly raced five year-old mare who has managed six wins from nine career starts including three in a row during her last campaign.
Two of those wins were at Group 3 level and she is four from four over 1400m.
I was impressed with her trial win at Geelong leading into this first up assignment and she looks the one to beat.
Race 6: No. 2 Mollynickers
The Peter Moody trained filly has plenty of natural ability which was proven with two impressive wins to start her last campaign.
She closed out that prep in the Group 1 Flight Stakes where she was beaten just over two lengths and the 1400m first up suits.
She does tend to settle back in her races so she may have a bit of work to do late but the wide open expanse of Flemington will be an advantage.
Race 8: No. 4 Imperatriz
Couldn’t have done much more during her last campaign where she won four in a row, three at Group 1 level.
There was an argument that she avoided the better sprinters during the start of that prep but put that to bed with a win down the Flemington straight in the VRC Classic.
In a field made up of horses that want 1200m+, she will land on the speed and be very tough to run down.
Race 9: No.12 Jimmystar
The sky is the limit for the very progressive Jimmystar especially after he dominated his rivals first up at Caulfield to win by over two lengths.
That was the fifth win of his short six-start career and although this is another step up in grade, he’s being asked to carry just 54kg.
