The Australian Guineas is a Group 1 race for three-year-olds run over 1600m at Flemington racecourse under set weight conditions.

The race was first run in 1986 and has been won by some champion horses including Mahogany (1996), Miss Finland (2007) and Alligator Blood (2020).

We’ve offered our thoughts on every runner below and offer our betting plays with the latest odds from JustBet.

1. Riff Rocket (9)

The Chris Waller trained gelding has been placed in all but one of his eight career race starts and closed out his spring campaign with a win in the Group 1 VRC Derby.

He proved he is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the autumn also by winning first up here at headquarters, showing a sharp turn of foot to score by just under a length.

Flemington suits him to a tee and he will again be the horse to beat.

2. Veight (6)

A winner of four of his nine starts to date, Veight returned to the track this campaign with a win at The Valley over 1200m.

He then tackled the older horses in the C.F Orr Stakes where he was beaten 1.4 lengths behind Mr Brightside over 1400m.

He’ll appreciate stepping back his own age group and the 1600m is not an issue.

3. King Colorado (12)

Is yet to win from two starts this prep but has been runner on both occasions.

The Group 1 J.J Atkins winner was well supported in betting at Flemington last start but was run down late by Riff Rocket.

Will be ready to peak now at his third run and the 1600m suits.

4. Apulia (15)

Took out the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase over 2040m in the spring and was beaten by the barest of margins in the Derby behind Riff Rocket.

Comes into this race first up and will both need the run and appreciate further as he gets into his prep.

5. Zipaway (10)

Was a head away from winning the Group 1 Northerly at Ascot during the summer carnival earning him a trip to the eastern states.

Was out sprinted at Group 2 level at Caulfield last time out but will be better over 1600m now.

Looks value in the market.

6. Cap Ferrat (2)

Riff Rocket was excellent first up but there were many good performances from that race including this guy who finished sixth.

He made considerable ground late in the race, savaging the line to be beaten under three lengths.

He’s still a maiden but both Flemington and 1600m will suit now.

7. The Pendragon (14)

Put together three wins in a row in New Zealand including one at Group 2 level over 1400m this prep.
Will need to improve to step up to this level and has drawn a tricky gate.

8. Run Harry Run (16)

Closed out his spring campaign with three wins in a row including the Group 3 Blue Sapphire at Caulfield over 1400m.

Not a lot went right for him first up but he’d need to find something to be competitive here.

9. Sunsets (13)

Won his maiden over 1600m but that was at Donald on a soft track.

Has a win over Riff Rocket in the Norman Robinson at Caulfield and was excellent when finishing third in the Derby.

Tackles this race first up but clearly has some ability.

10. Verdad (3)

I thought his first up run at Flemington was excellent and although Riff Rocket and King Colorado went past him, he wasn’t beaten far.

If he can settle closer to the speed and get an easier time up front, he can run a hell of a race at a big price.

11. Snow Patrol (7)

Brings in a different form line to many of these having won a Group 2 race at Caulfield leading in.

That was his first go at black type racing and he is a lightly raced horse with plenty of upside.

12. Southport Tycoon (4)

Has been beaten by the barest of margins in both starts so far this prep including a narrow defeat behind Snow Patrol at Caulfield.

Another progress type that wouldn’t surprise if he figured in the finish.

13. Otago (5)

Won his first two starts to earn him a chance against the big boys at Flemington last start.

Had a really nice run in transit in that event and I loved the way he kept fighting right to the line to be beaten 1.6 lengths.

Maps to get another nice run throughout from barrier five and is another that appeals at a big price.

14. Hey Fat Cat (1)

Is backing up for the fourth week in a row so fitness will not be an issue!

Put together two wins in a row to start this campaign and while he has been far from disgraced in his last three, this looks beyond him.

15. Quintessa (8)

Has been racing very consistently in high quality races in New Zealand and is a Group 1 winner over 1600m over the ditch.

Was only beaten two lengths against the older horses at Te Rapa last start at Group 1 level and gets her chance in Australia now.

Another that could cause an upset.

16. Vieste (17)

Failed to feature in Group. Races in the past and was well beaten in a benchmark 64 first up.

17. Mah Ali (11)

Very similar to the filly above and looks out of her depth here.
