Randwick Guineas Tips - Can Broadsiding prevail as a short priced favourite or is there an upset in store?

A field of nine have accepted for the Randwick Guineas and it is the last start Hobartville Stakes (1400m), winner, Broadsiding, that heads the market at $1.60, while the likes of Swiftfalcon, Aeliana and Linebacker are others below the $10 quote. 

Seven of the field of nine come out of the Hobartville Stakes and it was Broadsiding that settled handy at his first run since the 2024 Champions Mile (1600m) last spring, going on to win by a length from Swiftfalcon. The runner-up produced the fastest late splits. 

The Chris Waller filly, Aeliana, was 3rd, while Linebacker closed off well for 6th. Broadsiding went 6.8 lengths faster than standard benchmark, which is the best last start figure of any runner and well ahead of the likes of Our Benefactor and Depth Of Character, who come out of separate lead ups. 

Aeliana and Swiftfalcon are among those from the beaten brigade that should improve out to the 1600m, while Broadsiding is a Group 1 winner over the distance and placed 3rd in the Cox Plate (2040m) last year. 

There is no obvious leader here. Linebacker has gone forward in the past and connections intended for the gelding to settle forward last time in the Hobartville Stakes but he was slowly away. Firm Agreement, China Sea and Tenbury Wells are others that might find themselves forward but I don't expect any records being broken early. Broadsiding draws barrier 4 with James McDonald to ride and can tuck in just behind. Swiftfalcon and Aeliana are likely to settle back. 

Willing to go against Broadsiding. I respect what the Godolphin galloper has done so far in his career but not quite enough with the odds on offer. Aeliana was excellent in the Hobartville when 3rd and the Waller filly is one that should have a stack of scope for improvement. She took a while to get going at her initial preparation but really came into her own when stepping up to the 1600m for the first time with a dominant win at Flemington on Derby Day. She was then a fraction unlucky when a narrow runner-up in the Thousand Guineas (1600m) at the end of what was a long preparation. The daughter of Castelvecchio should have a nice time in transit from barrier 3 and looks to be the value at the quote. 

Our Benefactor is unproven at this level but might be one throwing into trifectas and first four’s. The Queenslander was a strong winner when fresh at Eagle Farm on February 15 over the 1400m, defeating Rock The Sunrise, with those two putting a gap on the rest. He is another that should enjoy the step up in trip and will strip fitter. A winner of three from five, the Bevan Laming-trained galloper went six lengths faster than standard at Eagle Farm after a few runs at his last preparation when overcoming trouble to take out what turned out to be a strong form race. That puts him right in the mix, while he is one that could take advantage of a slow tempo.
