George Ryder Stakes Tips - Runner-by-Runner Guide for the Rosehill Group 1
- Runner-by-Runner Guide to the George Ryder Stakes
- Who will take out the Rosehill Group 1?
- A $29 roughie stands out as value
The George Ryder Stakes is a race for three-year-old’s and above run over 1500m at Rosehill under weight-for-age conditions.
The Group 1 race was first run in 1903 and has been won by some champion horses including Manikato (1979,80), Emancipation (1983,84) and more recently Winx (2016,17,18,19).
Another superb field awaits us this weekend and we’ve gone through every runner below and offered our thoughts and betting plays with the best odds from Chasebet.
1. Think About It (17)
Joe Pride’s five-year-old gelding has been incredibly consistent throughout his career winning 11 times from just 14 trips to the races.
He has won two Group 1 races as well at last year’s Everest and over $11 million in prize money.
The trainer has been bullish about his horse getting out in distance which may account for his lackluster first up performance first up where he still managed to finish second at Group 1 level.
The barrier doesn’t help his chances but he’ll improve on what he produced fresh but he has been found with a high white blood cell count and horses, or humans, rarely perform at their best when fighting a virus.
2. Cepheus (14)
Was beaten nine lengths first up at Group 3 level and has failed to place in two goes at the highest level.
3. Pericles (15)
Finished a close second behind the Japanese invader Obamburumai in the Golden Eagle over 1500m at this track and distance during the spring.
All three runs this prep have been full of merit including a second behind Mr Brightside second up.
Hugh Bowman will have to produce one of his best from barrier 17 but he’s not without a chance.
4. Kovalica (19)
Proved his class when winning the Group 1 Queensland Derby last winter and while he has failed to win since, he’s been competitive at times.
Missed out on adding the Epsom to his trophy cabinet by the barest of margins during his spring campaign but will find this tougher at weight-for-age level.
Barrier doesn’t help but he has a sharp turn of foot.
5. Golden Mile (5)
He’s a bit of an enigma as his gap between his best and worst is quite large.
Was beaten less than a length in the Golden Eagle but has been beaten over five lengths in both starts so far this prep at a lower grade.
Is capable of producing a rating high enough to be competitive but you’ll have to take him on trust.
6. Navajo Peak (10)
Three goes at Group 1 level without a place and nothing suggests he can win a race of this quality.
7. Unspoken (1)
Four wins from four starts during his last campaign as he worked his way through the grades well.
A progressive type that will need to find another level to be competitive at weight-for-age Group 1 level.
8. Bandersnatch (11)
Has managed 10 wins from 43 career race starts but none at this level of racing.
9. Loch Eagle (9)
Has an excellent record on a heavy track but failed to win when conditions suited in both runs this prep and a far lower grade.
10. Mighty Ulysses (3)
Anabel Neasham has taken over this lightly raced gelding who has put together an impressive resume in England.
A winner of four races from 10 starts including a Group 3, all of his wins have been on a good surface which is rare coming from that part of the world.
Tom Marquand has never sat on the horse but will have plenty of options from barrier three.
Has been gelded since the last time anyone saw him.
11. New Energy (16)
Another import that has this time been sent to Ciaron Maher via Australian Bloodstock who have a handy record with these types.
Has just one win from 12 career starts but has been placed seven times.
A tricky way to make his new start as a race horse especially with the barrier but another I wouldn’t dismiss.
12. Amenable (4)
Amenable is a very progressive type of four-year-old and although he’s failed to place in four goes at the top level, he’s been more than competitive.
He was beaten just over two lengths behind Mr Brightside in the Memsie during the spring and then closed out that campaign when beaten 1.2 lengths in the Toorak Handicap.
May be better suited to handicaps at this stage but can surprise at a big price given his good barrier.
13. Williamsburg (13)
Twice placed at Group 1 level, the latest of which was this time last year.
His best ratings have been on a heavy track and I’m not sure he gets that this Saturday with the weather forecast being clear skies.
13. Cosmic Vega (18)
Another import that has been sent to Ciaron Maher and makes their Australian racing debut in this race.
Hasn’t won since May of last year and would prefer the sting out of the ground.
Jamie Kah will need a good steer from barrier 18.
14. Lady Laguna (12)
What do they say about mares in form?
This four-year-old just keeps stepping up to every challenge given to her and is one of only two females in the race that has been dominated by the boys in recent times.
Won her maiden Group 1 beating Think It Over in the Canterbury Stakes two weeks ago and she seems to grow a leg on a good surface.
Over the odds again and you can write her off at your own peril.
15. Militarise (7)
The first of the three-year-old’s that have accepted to take on the older horses and why wouldn’t you have a throw at the stumps!
A Group 1 winner at both two and three years of age and both runs this prep have been excellent.
16. Veight (8)
Has consistently given his all in all of his career starts and has twice been runner up at Group 1 level albeit against his own age.
Ran a bottler in the Australian Guineas to be beaten 1.3 lengths and the 1500m looks an ideal distance for him.
17. Encap (2)
Another consistent three-year-old out of a bunch of very even young horses.
Has earned a shot against the older ones after three solid runs so far this prep and has drawn to get a lovely run in transit from barrier two.
18. Tiz Invincible (6)
Her form is much better than it appears on paper and she has had her share of bad luck in running at crucial stages.
In saying that, she still seems out of her depth at this level.
