2024 Flight Stakes Preview

Autumn Glow is the warm favourite in markets after the barrier draw and is unbeaten in her three runs, coming off a last start victory in what is usually the key lead up to this race, the Tea Rose Stakes (1400m).

That was held at Randwick on September 21 and the Chris Waller-trained galloper settled outside the leader on what was a slow tempo before hitting the lead and going on to win by more than a length from Snow In May.

Her stablemate, Lazzura, was 4th. Autumn Glow went just 1.2 lengths faster than standard benchmark, which was due to the slow early pace. She came home in a slick 33.32 seconds over the last 600m. Snow In May settled worse than midfield and ran home in 33.08. She copped a bit of traffic early in the straight before producing the fastest last 200m. The John O’Shea filly was unbeaten in her two runs prior.

Lady Shenandoah is one of four Waller gallopers in the race and is one of three last start winners. She was too good for the likes of Mayfair and Snack Bar at Rosehill in the Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m), going 1.6 lengths faster than standard.

Interestingly, the best benchmark figures belong to Miss Bussinger, who os at cricket score odds for this race. She went 4.8 lengths faster when 7th behind Well Timed in a BenchMark 78 at Randwick on September 21.

Autumn Glow boasts the best career figure when going 7.5 lengths faster to win on debut ahead of Dawn Service over the 1200m at Rosehill back in August.

Declichy Boulevard is the fourth of the Waller runners and is somewhat in the market. She has won two of three and was a tad unlucky at Warwick Farm first up before catching the eye late at Caulfield behind Lilac in the Jim Moloney Stakes (1400m). She can measure up.

The likes of Harlem Queen, Wings Of Desire and Powers Of Opal will all need to produce personal bests to feature in the finish.

One thing to factor into the form is the likely lack of early speed and we might see a slowly run affair, as per the Tea Rose Stakes. Autumn Glow may find herself in the lead from barrier 3 and I don't expect any surprises with any of her rivals going at a breakneck speed.

Autumn Glow certainly ticks all the boxes and will be ridden by James McDonald, who has a few options from barrier 3. He partnered her last time and is likely to pull the trigger at the top of the straight with the pair having the answers late in the piece. The daughter of The Autumn Sun is just about at an unbackable price, however. Try to shop around for something better than her odds ($1.50 with most bookies after the barrier draw) or pop her into your multi’s for the day.

2024 Flight Stakes Value Bet

For those that are after a roughie, Declichy Boulevard is probably one to consider but is likely to settle for a slightly easier race in Melbourne. Powers Of Opal faces a steep rise in class and might be more of an Oaks type horse but I liked the way she attacked the line in a 1400m BenchMark 72 at Randwick on September 7. She has scope for improvement and did run her last 600m in a slick 32.98. We can expect her to be running into the placings at a price.
