The 2024 Cox Plate will be held at Moonee Valley on Saturday October 26 and a number of the 2023 runners are expected to be there again, while there are some fresh contenders in early betting markets.
Pride Of Jenni holds favouritism with bet365 months out form the weight-for-age championship at the $5 quote, while the Godolphin youngster, Broadsiding, is on the second line of betting alongside Prognosis.
Via Sistina, Blow The Horn and Danon Beluga are also prominent, while last year’s runner-up, Mr Brightside, is a $26 chance.
Here are our top three long range predictions for the Cox Plate.
Pride Of Jenni
It is hard to ignore the feats of Pride Of Jenni, who comes off a remarkable autumn campaign that saw her claim the $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) by more than six-length from Via Sistina. The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper has won four of there past six starts with those coming at Group 1 level and at one stage led the Queen Elizabeth Stakes by 30 lengths, breaking the hearts of her opposition. The late maturer should be suited at the Valley and has come on in leaps and bounds since her only start at the venue, which yielded a runner-up performance behind Amelia’s Jewel at Group 2 level over the 1600m. She is the one they will have to run down.
Prognosis
We are yet to know if Prognosis will make it down under but the Japanese galloper brings some world class form and might be the pick of the contingent of foreign raiders. Japan had success in the Cox Plate with Lys Gracieux in 2019 and the lightly raced six-year-old has form around the 2023 Cox Plate winner, Romantic Warrior, having finished runner-up behind that horse in two of his past three starts, while he was 3rd behind the champion, Equinox, in his other start in that time period.
Celestial Legend
Broadsiding is the favoured younger horse coming through the ranks in terms of the market, but I wouldn’t mind having something on Celestial Legend. The Les Bridge-trained galloper will be a four-year-old by the time the Cox Plate rolls around and connections will be tempted to have a crack at the Golden Eagle (1500m) for horses restricted to his age. But the son of Dundeel can clearly measure up, based on his performances in the autumn. He knocked over Militarize in a thrilling edition of the Randwick Guineas (1600m). That horse had been competitive in the Cox Plate last year, finishing within two-lengths of Romantic Warrior. Celestial Legend then went more than 16 lengths faster than standard to claim the Doncaster Mile (1600m) at his next start. He looks the real deal and can easily stretch out over the 2040m in the spring.
