The fillies and mares line up in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf on Day 2 of the Championships at Randwick.
The race is contested over 1600m specifically for fillies and mares under weight-for-age conditions.
First run in 1972, some quality females have won the race including Typhoon Tracy (2010), More Joyous (2011,12) and Atishu (2023).
Below our our thoughts on every runner as well as our top four selections in the race.
1. Atishu (2)
Six year-old mare racing in career best form right at the moment, evident by her two Group 1 victories including a win in this race last year.
Ran into a place in the Australian Cup against the boys last start and while she’s better suited to Flemington, three of her 10 wins have been here at Royal Randwick.
Drawn well and suited at weight-for-age.
2. Zougotcha (1)
Another mare that is racing better than she ever has which is exactly what you want when heading into this sort of event.
Was impressive beating Lady Laguna first up at Group 2 level and then gave plenty of good fillies and mares weight in the Coolmore Classic and still beat them.
It’s going to take a very good one to beat here at weight-for-age with the form she is in.
3. Campionessa (13)
Won her maiden Group 1 in New Zealand on Boxing Day and her performances at the top level over there earned her a trip over the ditch.
She beat the boys at Group 2 level at Caulfield and then placed last time out at The Valley.
Her best is good enough to be competitive but I’m unsure of her winning chances at this level.
4. Ruthless Dame (16)
Both runs this prep have been full of merit and she will be ready to peak at her third run this prep.
She watched Olentia go past her at Rosehill last time out and the jury is out whether she runs a strong mile.
5. Semana (4)
Her overall racing resume reads well having placed in 13 of 16 career starts and the daughter of Winning Rupert has won two of four this prep.
Both losses have been by small margins, the most recent to Zougotcha who she meets slightly worse at the weights.
She’s flying, she’s drawn well in barrier four and she represents great value at her current price.
6. Olentia (10)
Chris Waller trained four-year-old mare with a huge amount of upside and she proved just how good her best is when scoring a dominant win in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes two weeks ago.
The winner of that race has gone on to win this in the last two years and she will be ready to peak now at this stage of her campaign.
7. Eternal Flame (6)
Another progressive type of four-year-old who has been working her way through the grades well and comes into this Group 1 event off the back of two wins in a row.
The latest win at The Valley was at Group 2 level over Rumbled Again and Campionessa and if she can take another step forward, she may just level up to these!
9. Renaissance Woman (7)
Racing well without winning so far this autumn and she managed to place over 2000m at Rosehill last time out.
There are others I prefer and she looks the correct price.
10. Madame Pommery (12)
This daughter of No Nay Never tends to be a bit of an enigma and can mix her form to say the least which has many punters both wary and simultaneously believing there is a big race win in her somewhere.
This isn’t a race where I want to trust that her best shows up when there are so many in form mares but the price is right if you do!
11. Osmose (11)
Earned her shot at a Group 1 when beating Thalaassophile at Group 3 level last time out over 1900m.
All of her best overseas form was over further than 1600m so the step back in distance seems a little weird but she’s racing well.
12. Barbie’s Fox (9)
Yet to place in four starts this campaign and has had five goes at Group 1 level without placing.
13. More Secrets (5)
Thought she was well suited in the Coolmore at the weights but was disappointing.
This is a different kettle of fish at set weights but she is an enormous price!
14. Tropical Squall (3)
The only poor run she’s produced was at the end of her spring campaign in the VRC Oaks but she has come back really well and proven she is probably the best of her class of fillies.
Already a two-time Group 1 winner including first up this campaign and was beaten half a length in the Coolmore by Zougotcha who she meets at the same weight in this event.
Drawn to get a lovely run in transit and is one of the main chances.
15. Arctic Glamour (14)
Has been racing well without winning during this autumn campaign and seems to be better suited on top of the ground like she was last start when second to Olentia.
Would need to improve to be a chance.
16. Makarena (8)
Not everything has gone right for her this time in but the daughter of Snitzel has proven she can mix it with some of the better fillies going around as well as the older mares.
The 1600m at Randwick is the main concern but she’s drawn well in barrier eight and represents good each way value.
17. Tiz Invincible (17)
Has raced at a high grade for the majority of her short career but is yet to placed from four attempts in Group 1s at her own age.
