- Can Orchestral be beaten?
The staying fillies line up in the Group 1 Australian Oaks at Randwick on Saturday over 2400m under set weights.
First run in 1885, some champion three-year-old fillies have won this race including Light Fingers (1965), Surround (1977) and more recently Verry Elleegant (2019).
Below we have gone through every runner in this year’s edition and our top four selections in the race can be found at the end.
1. Orchestral (3)
Made it five wins in a row when making her Australian racing debut in the Vinery Stud at Rosehill although she wasn’t as dominant as her short quote had suggested she’d be.
She reeled in Tutta La Vita late but she did look to be extending away from the rest of the field late which may have been the fitness edge she had after a long prep.
Has to go back up in distance now but she is the one they have to all beat.
2. Quintessa (2)
Another consistent filly from New Zealand who has performed well in Australia without winning so far.
Ran the fastest last 200m in the Australian Guineas against the boys over 1600m and then was beaten by the barest of margins in the Alister Clark at The Valley last time out.
We are yet to see her out to a staying distance but she will appreciate tackling her own sex and has drawn to get a lovely run in transit from barrier two.
3. Zardozi (9)
The VRC Oaks winner has been given a nice prep as she attempts to win the two major Oaks races of the three-year-old season.
She was making up ground off Orchastral in the Vinery Stud but the extra fitness of that filly just told late.
Was the stable trying to avoid the New Zealand filly last week by accepting for the Derby or do they just think she is going well enough that she could have done both?
We’ll never know as she was scratched but we do know that she can run a strong 2400m and she’s a tough filly with plenty of natural ability.
4. Tutta La Vita (7)
Looked the winner for a long way in the Vinery Stud when Nash Rawiller produced one of his cheeky rides but Orchestral just got her late.
The daughter of The Autumn Sun has been more than competitive at this grade of racing but her pedigree doesn’t scream stayer and she’s one I think has come up a bit short in the market.
5. Autumn Angel (8)
Already a multiple group winner from just eight starts during her short career and one of those came second up from a spell this prep at Flemington.
She had four weeks in between runs when producing a huge run at Randwick on a heavy track last weekend, made even more impressive by the fact she was asked to carry 61kg.
Peter Moody was bullish about his filly’s chances of beating the favourite when speaking during the week and she is much better back on top of the ground which she is likely to be on Saturday.
The extra distance is the main concern but we are getting a nice price to find out.
6. Basilinna (6)
Finished third in the VRC Oaks won by Zardozi and has been racing well without winning so far this campaign.
Autumn Angel beat her by a head over 1600m at headquarters and she then took on the boys at The Valley and was beaten only 2.7 lengths.
Not the worst and seems over the odds at her current quote.
7. Dances With Hooves (4)
Brings winning form into this race having saluted in her last two in a row against the older horses albeit at Tamworth and Newcastle.
This is a big rise in class but she’d drawn well and you have to be in it to win it!
8. Piplup (10)
Narrowly won her maiden at start four at Hawkesbury two starts back and was well beaten in the Vinery Stud at her next outing.
Would need to improve dramatically to be competitive.
9. True Fairy (1)
The stable thought she’d earned a shot against the top line staying fillies in the Vinery Stud off the back of a win at Grafton.
She failed to prove she is up to this standard of racing so I’m not sure how she turns the tables in this event.
10. Bush Girl (5)
Has been competitive in most races she has contested but none at this level and she’s yet to win from eight race starts.
