Sandown Racing Tips for September 9 – Tennessee Bound the one to catch in the Chautauqua Stakes

Here are our best bets from the meeting, which is one of the major meetings from around Australia that we are previewing in our Wednesday tips.

Foxenberg can go close in the opener at Sandown. The five-year-old resumed at Sale on August 21 and it was all one-way traffic, with Mainmankash leading on a cruisy tempo before putting the foot down to win by a big margin. Foxenberg held the others at bay as the runner-up and should take improvement from that run. At the second run of his last campaign, the Clayton Douglas-trained galloper improved four lengths on benchmark figures when fifth on the Caulfield Heath in a Benchmark 78 behind She’s An Artist. The son of Foxwedge should enjoy the favours from barrier 4 and gets the blinkers on for the first time.

Keen on Tennessee Bound in the Chautauqua Stakes, which carries over from last Saturday’s Sandown meeting after the final two races were postponed due to severe weather. The five-year-old has won six of her seven career starts and tasted defeat in the most recent of those when runner-up behind the highly promising Gold Coast Belle over 1300m here on August 22. She was hampered early and carried wide but was strong through the line, running more than 10 lengths faster than standard benchmark. The daughter of Written Tycoon is likely to lead and will be hard to run down late in the piece.

Mystery ’N’ Drama shapes as an improver in Race 9. The four-year-old drops in grade from a Saturday Benchmark 78 and wasn’t far away when seventh at the August 22 Caulfield meeting behind Recuperato. She settled behind the leading pair but didn’t really enjoy a clear crack at them when finishing just over two lengths away. The Moody/Coleman mare comes into this third-up and took a couple of runs to get going last prep before winning twice at Sandown and placing in the Angus Armanasco Stakes (1600m) behind Sheza Alibi and Salty Pearl. Luke Cartwright rides and just needs to negotiate the tricky barrier early to find a midfield spot with cover.

It was a very impressive win by Buccleuch when resuming on August 22 and the promising galloper from the Patrick Payne stable can go back-to-back. His first-up effort came on the Hillside circuit over 1400m, where he settled handy before rounding them up and kicking clear to win by nearly five lengths from Fear No Evil. The four-year-old has now won four of eight and ran a very healthy 12.5 lengths faster than standard benchmark. He has been a big improver on figures in his two second-up runs to date and looks to have the class to overcome the big weight.
