Race 3: No.7 Grandini
The Rod Northam-trained galloper is second-up today and looks in the mix for a shot at victory in this event.
Last start, the Toronado mare was fresh off a 19-week spell and wasn’t too far away when finishing sixth in the Coolmore Denman Cup (H’cap) over 1280m at Muswellbrook.
Slowly away, Anna Weatherlake settled her last of the eight runners to the turn before tracking wide on straightening and was doing her best work late, beaten just 1.5 lengths on the line.
From gate six, she maps to settle back in the field again with Weatherlake in the saddle again where she steps-up to a more suitable trip today.
Fitter for that first-up run and coming in 3kgs under the limit (after the claim), the mare represents good value here and looks well worth an each-way ticket in this contest.
Race 7: No.3 Panta Rhei
The Justin Drake-trained galloper is high flying this time in and looks every chance of upsetting the odds-on favourite (Mainstay) in this event.
Last start, the Astern mare came off back-to-back runner-up finishes when she went one better and clobbered her rivals by winning a BM58 Hcp, here over 1200m.
From gate nine, Reece Jones had her working early to cross and eventually settled outside the leader where she travelled well to the turn, then in the run home, always had the leader’s measure and over the final 100m, took control and went on to win by 1.5 lengths in the end.
Stepping-up to Class 2 company here, she draws ideally in gate one where she maps to be up near the speed with Jones at the helm again.
The track specialist is at her peak and her resume suggests she is the one to beat in this contest.
Race 8: No.8 Zampano
Melissa Dennett saddles-up Zampano here who is three starts into this preparation and looks ready to strike in this event.
Last start, the Tassort gelding was third-up when he finished third in a BM82 Hcp over 1000m at Tamworth.
Stepping-up from Class 3 company that day, Braith Nock settled him mid-field early where he worked to keep in touch with the early speed to the turn, then in the run home, kept chasing bravely but couldn’t bridge the gap from the first two over the line.
Facing similar company here, he gets the gun-run from gate one where he maps to settle mid-field or better with Nock steering the ship again.
Fourth-up and at his peak, the five-year-old is ideally placed here and looks the testing material in this contest.
