Race 4: No.2 Sky Deep
The Caspar Fownes-trained galloper returns from the season break in good form and looks set to male a statement in this event.
Last start, the Deep Field gelding came off an unplaced run at Sha Tin and returned here where he beat all but one home in a Class 4 Hcp over 1650m.
Joao Moreira settled him second on the fence to the turn, then on straightening was held up to the 300m mark before securing a rails run and looked the winner but was beaten by one better carrying 2kgs less on the night.
With a turn in the weights here, he gets the gun-run from gate one and maps to settle just behind the speed with Ellis Wong as the new pilot.
A trouble-free run tonight should see him as the one to beat in this contest.
Race 5: No.8 Samarkand
Jamie Richards saddles-up Samarkand here who boasts a strong record at Happy Valley and on fresh legs tonight, looks a genuine contender at odds.
Last start, the Mongolian Khan gelding resumed off a three-month break and wasn’t disgraced when finishing fourth in a Class 3 Hcp, here over 1650m.
From gate 11, Lyle Hewitson took him straight to lead on settling where he set a solid early pace to the turn, then in the run home, battled on gamely to beat all but the placegetters to the line, beaten just 1.5 lengths in the end.
He draws barrier eight tonight and maps to settle near the speed with Zac Purton as the new pilot for this assignment.
A five-time winner here and already a winner when first-up, he looks well worth an each-way ticket in this contest.
Race 8: No.4 Tycoon Resources
The Tony Cruz-trained galloper resumes boasting three wins from four starts to date and looks a genuine contender for the big prize in this event.
Last start, the Written Tycoon gelding was unbeaten after three runs before finishing unplaced in a Class 3 Hcp over 1200m at Sha Tin.
Angus Chung settled him fourth on the fence to the turn, then in the run home, weakened badly to finish a long last in the race.
A vet’s exam showed the horse to have an irregular heart rate post-race and was ordered to trial which he did recently at Sha Tin and won.
Coming off the six-week season break tonight, he draws gate seven and maps to settle in the first half-dozen with Chung in the saddle again.
Already a winner when first-up and unbeaten in three starts at Happy Valley, he looks set to return to the winner’s circle in this contest.
