Caulfield Racing Tips for August 16- Private Eye the one to beat in the PB Lawrence Stakes

Capper Thirtynine will go close in Race 4. The consistent and somewhat underrated gelding from the Nick Ryan stable resumed over the 1200m at Flemington on August 2 and settled handy before giving a bit of a kick and just missing in a three-way go when runner-up behind De Bergerac. He gets out to the 1400m and will strip fitter second up, while he performed well in a string of races at the distance at his last preparation with narrow runner-up performances behind the likes of Enxuto and Is It Me. Expect him to cross over to find a spot up on the speed early on and with just 54kg on his back after the claim for Luke Cartwright, he will take some beating at the business end. 

Private Eye is the one to beat in PB Lawrence Stakes. The eight-year-old has been targeted at longer races over the past 12 months in comparison to earlier in his career and has had just one start in 2025, for a solid 3rd at Group 1 level over the 1400m in the Stradbroke Hancicap (1400m). He carted 57kg that day, conceding 4kg to the winner, War Machine. The Jo Pride-trained galloper shows no signs of slowing down as yet and comes in with a trial win under the belt, with that coming ahead of Ceolwulf. The stable have an excellent record when sending their horses south and under the weight-for-age conditions, he is a clear top pick. 

Too Darn Discreet might be worth sticking with in the final race of the day at Caulfield. The four-year-old showed flashes of some serious talent this time a year ago when rising from Maiden grade to win at Group 2 level but has had a bit of a stop start time of it since then, resuming with an average effort over the 1400m here last month before producing a real eye-catcher when rattling home to defeat Farhh Flung when stepping up to the 1620m at Flemington. She rises in grade but drops to the 53kg, while she should be nearing her peak at her third run back. The daughter of Too Darn Hot is two from two over the 1600m and just needs an ounce of luck early on from barrier 12.
