Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at the Gold Coast on 19 September.

Race 2: Three-Year-Old Hcp (1400m) – Murkado

The Richard Laming-trained colt was second-up on Saturday and caught the eye when finishing a close-up third in this event.

Ben Osmond settled him last of the eight runners to the turn, then in the run home, stuck to the fence and ran into trouble before re-balancing and still tightened for room between runners, did well to finish a long neck from victory.

Now fitter after those two runs back, he should be ready to produce his best and looks well worth following this preparation.

Race 4: Benchmark 70 (1200m) – Dark Arts

The Tony Gollan-trained gelding was second-up on Saturday and did well when finishing fifth in this event.

Emily Pozman settled him mid-field to the turn, then tracked wide but came back inside and eventually found clean air and finished on strongly along the fence to cross the line a little over two lengths from the winner.

Fitter now, the five-year-old can go on with it from here and should improve even further with more racing.

Race 7: Open Hcp (1400m) – Soverato

The Chris Waller-trained mare was first-up on Saturday and after a 15-week break, fared well in this event while finishing unplaced in the end.

Jake Bayliss settled her back in the field and in the run home, stuck to the fence where she eventually saw daylight and finished off well, beaten just 1.5 lengths over the line.

Two second-up appearances to date ended with top-two finishes and now the four-year-old will be looking for more ground. Keep her safe this time in.
