Race 5: No.8 Columbus
The Les Bridge-trained galloper is in top-shelf form this preparation and looks well placed here to go on with it in this event.
Last start, the Dundeel gelding came off an impressive win against BM72 opposition when he beat all but one home against similar company, here over 1800m.
James McDonald settled him second behind a tearaway leader who had 15 lengths up his sleeve on the turn, then in the run home Columbus ran down the deficit but had to fight off another challenge and was first past the post, but lost the race on protest in the end.
Stepping-up to BM78 company here, he draws gate seven and maps to sit just behind the speed on settling and with J.Mac riding in Melbourne, Zac Lloyd is the new pilot for this assignment.
Three wins and four minor placings from eight starts to date paints the picture on this four-year-old who will take a ton of beating in this contest.
Race 6: No.7 Chix
The O’Shea & Charlton Team saddle-up Chix here who is second-up and looks a definite threat to victory at odds in this event.
Last start, the Flying Artie mare resumed off a 19-week spell and impressed when she took out a BM72 over 1250m, here on the Kensington circuit.
Ridden a treat by Anna Roper, she was box-seating on settling to the turn, then peeled off the leader’s heels and soon after straightening, took control of the race and untroubled, went on to score a comfortable win on the line.
Drawn ideally in gate three here, she maps to settle in the first half-dozen with Zac Lloyd taking the reins for the first time.
Already a winner when second-up, the four-year-old is right in the mix here and is well worth an each-way ticket in this contest.
Race 7: No.8 Headwall
The Matt Smith-trained galloper has been in good touch without winning this campaign and that can all change in this event.
Last start, the Dream Ahead gelding did a mighty job to finish a close-up fourth in the Group 1 Everest, here over 1200m.
Kerrin McEvoy settled him back in the field to the turn, then in the run home, he spotted eventual winner Tempted some six lengths, only to finish alongside the placegetters, less than a length from victory where they had to run 1:08.2 to beat him.
Dropping back to Group 2 company here, he draws well in gate three and maps to settle back in the field again with Chad Schofield the riding elect for this assignment.
Coming off three solid runs and dropping 2kgs here, the seven-year-old will be at his peak and prove hard to hold out in this contest.
