Cranbourne Racing Tips for July 16 – Illuminance to light them up at the $8

Cranbourne racing takes place on Thursday, July 16, with a program set down for Cranbourne.

Here are our best bets from the meeting, which also features in our wider racing preview for racing from around Australia on Thursday.

Race 1 No.3- Thinkyahot


This shapes as a battle of the bridesmaids with the two key chances, Tagamate and Thinnkyahot, combining for eight placings without a win. Going with the latter, Thinkyahot, who does seem to have some upside stepping up to the 1400m at his fourth run this time in. The Moody/Coleman galloper has placed in all three starts this campaign and motored home late over the 1200m on a Heavy deck at Sale two starts ago  to finish runner-up before stepping out as a $1.50 pop on the Ballarat Synthetic last time and going for home a fraction early when bloused by Lift Net, holding a solid gap on the rest of them. The son of So You Think might be ridden a tad more quiet this time around with cover just behind the leading pair from barrier 3 and will be hard to hold out at the business end. 

Race 4 No.14- From Yesterday


From Yesterday is set for improvement in Race 4. The Busuttin/Young galloper has had the four career starts and showed promise back in May with a 4th placing in a much harder race than this at Flemington before running 3rd in a Maiden at Moe in a race that has already produced three winners. He was sent for a crack at the Taj Rossi Series Final (1600m) and led them up but was battered in the run, pulling up with issues and being eased out of it. Maiden grade seems a much more suitable target at this stage and the figures her produced in his two runs prior to the Taj Rossi are better than what any other horse in this race has produced in their careers. The son of Admire Mars can slide across from the wide barrier to find a spot in the first half of the field and barring any bad luck, he should be hard to beat. 

Race 6 No.8- Miss Cotoletta


Going with Miss Cotoletta in Race 6. The four-year-old comes into this second up and was just a tad too keen early on at Sale when stepping out off an 11-week break, looming as a strong chance in the straight before fading in the last 200m to finish two lengths off them. She was 3rd at Sale over the 1006m in her only other run this year. Trial form has been excellent and the daughter of Flying Artie will strip fitter for this and just needs to settle a bit better. She is no slouch on the wet and will position in an excellent spot early on from barrier 5. 

Race 7 No.11- Illuminance


Illuminance can make a bold bid in Race 7. The five-year-old resumed over 1400m at Cranbourne on June 21, where she had little luck after copping early checks and losing momentum at different stages before sticking on well to finish less than three lengths from the winner. The daughter of Headwater has a strong record of improving at her second run back from a spell, particularly when dropping to 1200m. She produced a performance nearly seven lengths faster than benchmark at this stage of her last campaign at Caulfield and has won twice over the trip. She also boasts a win and a second from two starts over 1200m at this track. With natural improvement to come, expect her to be right in the finish.
