Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Randwick on 11 July.

Race 1: Two-Year-Old Hcp (1400m) – Columbo

The Greg Hickman-trained youngster was having his second race start on Saturday and caught the eye when finishing fourth in this event.

He settled second-last of the ten runners and remained there to the turn where Andrew Calder kept him stuck to the fence, then on straightening, worked him into the race and while too far back to be a winning chance, still hit the line well to beat all but the placegetters home.

Fitter for those two runs now, he could be looking for a mile even this early in his career, still keep him under notice as he shows plenty of potential.

Race 3: BM72 Midway Hcp (1600m) – Perfect Justice

The John Sargent-trained gelding was three starts into his current campaign when he lined-up on Saturday and did well to pull off a grinding win in this event,

Trapped three-wide to the turn (after jumping from barrier eight of ten), Siena Grima sat patiently until straightening where she eased him off heels and drove him to the line, turning the tables on The Mona Lisa (who beat him last start), meeting her better at the weights this time.

A fine effort on a Heavy 9 and there should be more wins on the horizon for this four-year-old.

Race 9: Benchmark 88 Hcp (1400m) – Lugh

The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding was second-up on Saturday and sent out a $3 favourite, did well in the end to finish fourth in this event.

Sitting outside the leader without cover, he levelled up on the corner but then looked out of gas and half way home was labouring, before finding something more and over the final 100m, boxed on strongly to beat all but the placegetters home.

Now even fitter for two runs back, the Snitzel five-year-old has already won five of his 11 starts and might be looking for further now.
