Randwick Blackbookers

Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Randwick on August 10.
  • Race 1:  Well Timed
  • Race 8:  Arctic Glamour
  • Race 9:  Manzoice

Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?

Race 1:  Well Timed

The Kembla Grange-based galloper was fresh off a 20-week spell on Saturday where Nash Rawiller rode him a treat, seeing him beat all but the winner home in the end.

Settling better than mid-field, one off the fence with cover, he peeled off heels on the turn and set sail after the leaders where he was spotting them five lengths as they straightened.

A lack of race fitness was all that prevented him from saluting as he hit the line just over a length behind the winner, taking ground off him over the final 200m.

Already a winner when second-up, he will be looking for a little further next time and should give us a bold sight.

Race 8:  Arctic Glamour

The Rosehill-based mare resumed off a 17-week spell on Saturday and turned plenty of heads as she came within a whisker of rolling red-hot race-favourite, Schwarz in this Group 2 event.

Kerrin McEvoy settled her last of the nine runners where he played the waiting game and showing a ton of patience, left it to thew last possible moment before letting her loose when she rattled home to finish just a neck from victory in the Missile Stakes.

The four-year-old has won second-up previously but will be looking for more ground from here on so keep her safe for now.

Race 9:  Manzoice

The Chris Waller-trained galloper was resuming off a four-month absence when he beat all but one home on Saturday and should have finished a lot closer.

Nash Rawiller settled him three pairs back, one off the fence to the turn.

He then fanned a little wider but was then inconvenienced by his stablemate (Aramco) who laid out, pushing him further off the track.

Rawiller had to stop riding him and re-balance the Almanzor gelding, costing him plenty of momentum and any chance of winning.

Last year’s Victoria Derby winner looks to have returned in good touch and should show us a profit in the months ahead so stick with him for now.
