Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?
Race 2: Class 2 Highway Hcp (1100m) – Mrs Goldberg
The Matt Dunn-trained mare won first-up for the second time on Saturday and couldn’t have been more impressive in the process.
Nash Rawiller settled her better than mid-field (off the fence) to the turn, before peeling off heels, then stormed home and made it look easy as she crossed the line more than a length clear with plenty to spare.
The lightly-raced four-year-old now has three wins from her six career starts and already a winner when second-up, stick with her for now.
Race 4: Benchmark 78 (1600m) – King Of The Sea
The former Great Britain-based galloper was fresh off a 13-week spell and sent out a red-hot ($1.80) favourite, ran accordingly, giving nothing else a chance.
James McDonlad (J,Mac) settled him back in the field to the turn before tracking wide, then once clear, unleashed a powerful finishing burst and eased near the line, won by 1.5 lengths in the end.
The five-year-old now looks set for a promising Spring Carnival so keep him safe for now as he looks for further ground.
Race 7: Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) – Pembrey
The Tony Gollan-trained filly was first-up on Saturday after her Golden Slipper failure 22 weeks ago and put in the best performance of the day with an all-the-way win in this Group 2 affair.
From gate nine (of 10), J.Mac pushed forward from barrier rise and found the front where the filly set a solid pace to the turn, then in the run home, found another gear and increased her lead before being eased near the post, still putting 2.5 lengths on them and clocking the 1200m in a sizzling 1:08.7.
Now boasting three wins from her five starts to date, the three-year-old also looks set for a big Spring Campaign and will be worth following from here.
