Race 2: No.2 Cantero
The Team Hawkes-trained galloper has his second race start today and looks in line to go one better in this event.
Last start, the Spirit of Boom gelding was on debut and impressed when he beat all but one to the liner in a Maiden Hcp, here over 1200m.
From the outside gate (7), Tyler Schiller settled him at the tail of the field before working into the race on the turn, then tracking wide, he set sail after the leader and after spotting him six lengths on straightening, shaved almost five lengths of that lead, finishing second across the line and doing his best work over the final 100m.
Meeting maiden company again here over 1250m, he draws nicely in gate two and should settle near the fence with Schiller in control again.
Fitter for that debut effort, he looks every chance of figuring in the finish of this contest.
Race 5: No.6 Harry’s Evidence
The Rosehill-based galloper is second-up today and ticks enough boxes here to suggest back-to-back wins are on the cards in this event.
Last start, the Harry Angel gelding resumed off a 13-week spell and looked the goods when he claimed a first-up win in a BM64 Hcp, here over 1100m.
Chad Schofield settled him third on the fence to the turn, before coming off heels and in the run home, finished too strong for them, arriving in time to grab the gold medal for the race.
Stepping-up to BM72 opposition here, he draws gate six and maps to settle in the first half-dozen with Schofield in the saddle again.
Fitter for that first-up win and now a winner at the track, he looks a serious contender for the main prize in this contest.
Race 6: No.5 Melanite
John Thompson saddles-up Melanite here who is high-flying after three starts back and looks in the mix here for back-to-back success in this event.
Last start, the Dirty Work gelding stripped fitter off back-to-back minor placings when he took out a BM72 Hcp over 1100m at Randwick.
Kerrin McEvoy settled him mid-field to the turn, then in the run home, gathered in the leaders and grabbed victory on the line.
Meeting similar company here, he gets the gun-run from gate one and maps to settle better than mid-field on the fence with McEvoy steering the ship again.
He carries extra weight today but after three runs back, he will be at his peak here and looks set to stake a claim for victory in this contest.
