Race 3: No.3 Hemlock Stone
The Team Williams-trained Hemlock Stone is third-up today and sporting a gear change, looks ready to win.
Last start, the French-sired gelding showed plenty of improvement when he was a fast finishing third in a One Metro. Win Hcp, here over 1400m.
On a Soft 6 that day, regular rider Clint Johnston-Porter rode him a treat and after settling near mid-field, stuck to the fence where he ran home stoutly to grab the minor prize on the line, beaten less than two lengths in the race.
He meets easier company today and the stable have fitted the blinkers for the first time as Johnston-Porter steers the ship again.
The five-year-old steps up to the mile trip today and from gate seven, maps to settle near mid-field with cover.
Already a two-time winner at the track and fitter for two runs back, he looks right in the mix among these gallopers in this contest.
Race 4: No.2 Watch Me Rock
Another from the Team Williams stable is Watch Me Rock who is second-up today and looks poised for back-to-back wins in this event.
Last start, the Awesome Rock gelding resumed off a 12-week spell where as a drifting favourite ($2.20 - $3.50) proved too strong in beating home a Class 1 field over 1300m at Northam.
Apprentice, Chanel Cooper rode a copybook race when she settled him mid-field then steered him wide on the turn (as was the trend that day), and eventually got the better of the race-leader and went on to win by a length on the line.
William Pike returns for this assignment (after all four previous rides ended in podium finishes) where he has gate ten to deal with and maps to settle back in the field today.
He makes his Belmont debut today where his is already a winner when second-up.
If he can keep in touch with the early speed, he should prove hard to hold out again.
Race 6: No.8 Under Influence
The Team Pearce-trained Under Influence is high-flying at the moment and looks more than ready for the step-up in grade today.
Last start, the Caravaggio gelding made it five-straight podium finishes when he finished over the top of a BM66 field in a 1000m sprint at Belmont.
With Chris Parnham in the saddle, he settled last of the six runners but finished too strong for them in the end, taking home the major prize that day.
He faces BM72 company for the first time here where he gets the gun-run from gate one and maps to settle in the back half of the field.
His six starts at Belmont have all ended in top-three finishes, winning two of those.
Parnham sticks with him today and with a clear run to the line, he looks hard to hold out again.
Race 7: No.10 Soso Lucky
Another from the Team Pearce camp is Soso Lucky who is unbeaten in two starts and looks well placed here to make it three-straight in this event.
Last start, the Lean Mean Machine mare proved her Maiden win on debut was no fluke when she stepped up sharply in grade and clobbered a Class 3 field, here over 1300m.
Chris Parnham backed-up from that debut performance where he settled her mid-field on the fence, then sticking to the inside, found the lead inside the final 200m and left them rest to fight out the minors as she crossed the line more than two lengths ahead of them.
She comes into gate four (after early scratchings) and maps to settle just behind the speed with cover.
Parnham remains in pride of place and with a trouble-free run today, it will take a smart one here to deny her the hat-trick.
