Ballarat racing takes place on Thursday, August 6, with a competitive provincial meeting set down for Ballarat.

Here are our best bets from the meeting, which also feature in our daily selections.

Race 2 No.10- Lancetta


Lancetta is a clear top pick in Race 2. The five-year-old has had just the two career starts and was off the scene for a year following a solid 5th placing in a strong Maiden at Cranbourne in 2025, resuming with a 3rd behind Circus Lights over the 1500m on the Ballarat Synthetic on June 30. She was just a tad keen early on but kept coming to finish half a length off the winner, who has since performed well in a BenchMark 64 at Sandown. The daughter of Justify went just two lengths slower than standard benchmark, which is six lengths better than the next best last start figures of any runner. She comes in with five weeks in between runs nad has been well supported since markets opened. I suspect she will not remain a Maiden for too much longer. 

Race 3 No.9- Face The Wild


Keen on Face The Wild in Race 3. Love it when the McEvoy stable send their youngsters to the Synthetic and she will find this much easier than her first up effort when dropping out of it in a Saturday race at Caulfield. The former Queenslander scooted across to sit outside the leader but ran out of gas late in the piece to finish just over three lengths from Lucky Brook when she may not have handled the Soft that day. The daughter of Wild Ruler had trialled well leading into that and has been smashed in the betting. Expect her to work across from the draw and take plenty of beating. 

Race 5 No.2- Saluder


Going with Saluder in Race 5. The four-year-old is another that drops to an easier Maiden and was ok when resuming at Sandown, placing 5th behind French Accord. He raced greenly that day and is capable of improvement. At his debut prep, the Grahame Begg-trained galloper went from a 4th at Pakenham on debut to a runner-up at Sandown in a strong form race when second up. Stable switch to the Synthetic and he was a trial winner on the surface before his first up run, while the blinkers go on for the first time. 

Race 6 No.1- Spirited Defence


Going with the Synthetic track specialist, Spirited Defence, in Race 6. The six-year-old has had seven starts on the surface for four wins and five over the Ballarat 1200m for four wins and a runner-up. He was dominant when resuming with a two-length win at the track and trip when resuming before heading to Pakenham and placing 4th at his most recent start. That form mirrors a bit of a pattern last year when slightly flat second up before improving four lengths on benchmark figures to score, which was another track/trip victory. The son of National Defense carts the 61kg but has carried heavy weights to victory in the past and should enjoy a lovely time of it from barrier 5.
