Sale Racing Tips for March 1 – Local contenders well placed on Heavy going at Sale

Here are our best bets from the meeting, which also features in our daily tips.

Wetumpka is the one to beat in Race 2. The Peter Gelagotis-trained galloper is yet to win in five starts but has finished runner-up on three occasions and has been competitive in much harder company than this. He comes into this third up and was runner-up in a Future Stars Maiden behind Sapphire Siren when resuming before tackling Group 3 company at Flemington at his most recent start, placing 8th behind Sixties, beaten less than four lengths. This is a decent drop in grade back to a country Maiden and he has shown that he can handle wet ground with a runner-up at Sandown at his last prep, finishing ahead of Getta Good Feeling. This looks his race. 

Keen on Mainmankash in Race 3. The locally trained galloper has had just the one start with that coming back in July last year over the 1100m on Heavy ground at Sale, leading and pinching a break before going down late in the piece behind Till Dusk, putting four lengths on the rest of them. He is a bit of a risk off the long break but a recent trial win at Sale provides confidence, as does the stack of market support since the fields came out. From barrier 2, he should be hard to beat. 

Going with another local in Race 7 and it is Russian Roni that is worth thought at a bit of a price. The former Sydney galloper battled in his first four starts since switching stables before a change in tactics saw him bowl along last time at a solid clip. He looked in contention at the top of the straight before fading into 6th position. The six-year-old has the fitness in the tank now and his best form has been on the Heavy with a win and a couple of minors from four starts. It is also worth noting that the first two past the post in that race have since gone on to win and he comes in with the best last start benchmark figures of any runner in this race. Bailey Kinninmont rides and is two from six for the stable, providing a 160% profit on investment.
