Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?
Race 1: Two-Year-Old Plate (1000m) – Iconic Scenes
The Paul Shailer-trained youngster made his debut on Saturday and impressed with a solid win in this event.
The Better Than Ready gelding box-seated to the turn before coming off the leader’s heels then settled down to a three-horse battle to the line where hands and heels he got the bob-in on the line, with plenty to spare.
A solid effort on debut on a Heavy 10 that day and the future is looking bright for this galloper.
Race 7: Three-Year-Old Hcp (1200m) – Elevating
The Richard Laming-trained galloper was fresh off a 17-week spell when he beat all but one home in this event on Saturday.
Emily Lang settled him back in the field, spotting the leaders seven lengths before tracking wide short of the turn, then on straightening, he was the widest runner and in the blinding rain, ran home strongly to grab the silver medal on the line.
The Russian Revolution gelding is an improver and will strip fitter after this effort so stick with him for now.
Race 10: Open Hcp (1600m) – Demon Darb
Never on the track, the Robert Heathcote-trained galloper was second-up on Saturday and after jumping from gate nine (of 12), was always trapped deep to the turn, then in the run home and while never a winning chance, still ran home stoutly out wide and passed all but the placegetters in conditions unsuitable to him.
Beaten seven lengths as a $61 chance, he will strip even fitter from here and given a drier track next start, he may be worth following for a few more yet.
