Gawler racing takes place on Wednesday, May 27 with a 7-race program set down for the Gawler racetrack.

Race 3: No.5 Platino

The Michael Hickmott-trained galloper has his second race start here and looks set to improve and give this event a real shake.

Last start, the D'argento gelding made his racing debut and finished third in the Maiden Plate over 1100m at Horsham.

After winning three-straight trials before his first track appearance, punters sent him out a $1.95 favourite but things didn’t go according to plan and after a slow start and being held-up at vital stages in the race, he had to settle for the minor prize on the day.

Back after a four-week let-up, he draws wide in barrier eight here and maps to settle back in the field with Todd Pannell as the new pilot.

The step-up to the 1200m looks ideal for him here and avoiding any dramas today, he can figure in the finish of this contest.

Race 5: No.2 Southern Monarch

Will Clarken saddles-up Southern Monarch here who has impressed after three race starts and looks ideally placed for back-to-back success in this event.

Last start, the Alabama Express mare bounced back to record her second win when she took out a BM56 Hcp over 1350m at Strathalbyn.

From the outside gate (9), Jemma Gutte had her leading on settling and after setting a good pace, went on to win by almost a length on the line.

Fourth-up and at her peak here, she gets the gun-run from gate one and maps to be box-seating on settling with Gutte backing-up for the ride.

There’s plenty of upside about this mare and with a clear run to the line, she can claim another victory in this contest.

Race 7: No.4 Vexatious Choice

Second-up here, the Nicole Irwin-trained galloper looks well placed to ring-up win number two in this event.

Last start, the Hualalai gelding resumed off a 22-week spell and in need of the run, finished fourth in a Class 1 Hcp over 1100m at Strathalbyn.

Drawn the outside gate (9) that day, Stacey Metcalfe settled him at the tail of the field and elected to stay on the fence, then in the run home, he chased hard all the way and made up plenty of ground before being nosed-out of third prize on the line.

Fitter for that run, he draws much better here in gate two and maps to settle near mid-field on the fence with Metcalfe in the saddle again.

Already a winner when second-up, the four-year-old will appreciate the step-up to the 1200m here and up against BM 0-56 company, he should be there at the finish and looks well worth an each-way ticket in this contest.
