Blackbookers and Horses To Follow – Caulfield September 28 | Three to follow from Manikato Stakes day

We have identified the runners that caught the eye and are worth adding to your Blackbook following Sunday's meeting.

It was hard to make up ground out wide at Caulfield, with Jimmysstar in the Manikato Stakes one of the few exceptions on the day. The opener was dominated by the on-pacers, with Threads kicking clear to lead all the way.

Jacaranda was the best of those that came from off the speed, producing the fastest last 200m to finish fourth. Stewards noted that she raced keenly through the early stages when being restrained to obtain cover.

The daughter of Home Affairs has not won since taking out a three-horse Maiden at Seymour back in January, but has finished in the top four in each of her three runs this preparation, all in Saturday grade. She is worth sticking with.

Another that caught the eye from further back on an on-pacer-dominated day was Calamari Ring in the Scarborough Stakes for the fillies.

The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper settled last in the field of 11 and was saved for one final crack at them, producing the fastest last 200m of the race and the second-fastest of the entire meeting, behind only Jimmysstar’s effort in the Manikato Stakes.

She is another with just one win to her credit, with that victory coming ahead of subsequent Blue Diamond winner and Golden Slipper runner-up Streisand. Calamari Ring has now had three starts this preparation and finished in the top four in all three. She looks ready for a crack at the 1400m.

Good performance by Pericles to finish seventh in the Manikato Stakes, beaten just over three lengths.

The seven-year-old was resuming over the unsuitable 1200m and looked to be building nicely, recording the fastest splits from the 800m to the 400m. He was then held up from that point until around the 150m mark before eventually settling for seventh.

The Futurity Stakes winner from the autumn looks set for another strong campaign, potentially culminating in the Champions Mile (1600m) at Flemington, a race in which he finished runner-up last year.
