Thousand Guineas Tips - Local filly to upstage the red-hot favourite, Apocalyptic, in the Thousand Guineas

It’s a field that brings together the unbeaten Sydney star Apocalyptic, the booming closers Ole Dancer and Ferivia, and the benchmark-boosted improvers Chateau Eze and Salty Pearl — all with live claims to the $1.5 million prize.

The benchmark data tells a layered story. Apocalyptic ($2) produced a moderate figure in her Flight Stakes victory — 4.2 lengths slower than standard overall after a crawl through the first 1000m — suggesting the win was more about her control and class than raw pace. 

It’s hard to fault a filly who’s unbeaten and professionally handled the Sydney mile, but the data does raise the question: how much more is under the bonnet if she faces genuine pressure here?

Chateau Eze ($19) brings the best last-start benchmark rating in the race, having gone +8.5 lengths faster than standard when runner-up in the Jim Moloney Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield. From a wide draw she’ll need luck, but the raw numbers say she’s better than most think.

Then there’s Ferivia ($13) — the Thousand Guineas Prelude winner who went 5.6 lengths faster than standard that day, producing a strong midrace squeeze and holding off the late closers in a blanket finish. It’s a figure that’s well above par for this time of year, and her consistency gives her an undeniable place chance again.

And don’t dismiss the Moody-trained Ole Dancer ($5.50), who emerged from that same Prelude as the eye-catcher — she missed the start, was forced to settle near last, yet rattled off the fastest final 400m and 200m splits of the meeting, rating 3.4 lengths faster than standard late. 

That finish screamed “ready for 1600m”, and with a kinder draw this time, she can settle midfield under Blake Shinn and use that turn of foot more efficiently.

Add in Salty Pearl ($19), a filly trending sharply upward on the figures. Her Prelude run rated 2.6 lengths faster than standard, and she’s a known third-up improver. When she last hit that stage of a prep, she exploded to win at Caulfield by two lengths off a benchmark spike of more than ten lengths. 

The Ciaron Maher yard has made a habit of producing late-prep fillies to peak in Group 1s, and her profile — off a rising fitness curve, with tactical speed — fits that exact blueprint.

It’s a race where data and pattern collide. Apocalyptic is the class, but her figure ceiling remains untested; Ole Dancer and Salty Pearl are the two clear upward movers, while Chateau Eze and Ferivia bring the proven speed measures.

A moderately run affair looks likely, with Ferivia, Cherish Me, and Gotta Good Feeling all capable of pressing forward early. Apocalyptic should enjoy the run of the race just behind the speed, parked third or fourth one off the fence. Ole Dancer maps to land midfield with cover and be poised to launch late, while Zany Girl and Salty Pearl could track the speed in the first half dozen. Chateau Eze and Karinska will likely drift back early and look to sweep from the 600m mark when tempo lifts. If the leaders overdo it mid-race, the door swings wide open for those with closing strength to pounce.

The one with the figures and the set-up to win. Ole Dancer’s Thousand Guineas Prelude run rated 3.4 lengths faster than standard despite giving the field a start and running into dead ends before flashing late. That’s elite closing data for a filly having only her fourth career start, and her sectional profile screams for the mile. The Moody and Coleman team have built her fitness steadily, and from barrier five, Blake Shinn can park her midfield and produce her at the right moment. If she maintains her late sectional power and gets a more efficient run shape, she’s the most likely to topple the Sydney favourite.

She’s the improver hiding in plain sight. Salty Pearl’s Prelude performance rated 2.6 lengths faster than standard, and her third-up record tells you the next spike is coming. She was unlucky not to finish closer last time after covering ground throughout and still held her benchmark figure to within two lengths of Ferivia. Now fitter, she draws ideally in barrier six to stalk the speed and has already proven her love of Caulfield, where she returned a 10 benchmark spike winning third-up last prep. Maher’s record with similar profiles — lightly raced, peaking fillies stepping up to Group 1 level. Expect her to be right in the finish at a double-figure price.
