Race 3: No.2 Winchman
The Paul Shailer-trained galloper is high-flying after two starts back and ticks the right boxes here that suggest he can go back-to-back in this event.
Last start, the Hellbent gelding went one better than his first-up effort when he took out a Class 3 Plate over 1000m at the Gold Coast.
On a Heavy 8 that day, he settled mid-field early before tracking into the race nearing the turn, then scouting wide on the wet track, lost ground before running home strongly and making-up the lost turf, took over inside the final 100m, going on to score by a length on the line.
Meeting similar company here, he draws gate six and maps to settle in the first two pairs with Danny Peisley retaining the ride.
Runner-up twice in two previous third-up appearances and already a track and trip winner, the five-year-old looks a serious winning chance in this contest.
Race 6: No.4 Lady Lucifer
Second-up today, the David Vandyke-trained galloper drops in grade here and her resume suggests she will be fighting out the finish of this event.
Last start, the Hellbent mare resumed after eight months in the paddock and in need of the run, finished unplaced in a BM78, here over 1200m.
Well short of race fitness, she settled back in the field to the turn, then held her own in the run home, finishing 3.5 lengths from the winner.
Nicely drawn in gate five today, she maps to settle a lot closer to the speed here with Ben Osmond remaining aboard for this assignment and yet to miss a podium finish when second-up, the five-year-old looks the one to beat in this contest.
Race 8: No.12 Sequel
Team Munce saddle-up Sequel here who is fitter for two runs back and should now be ready to produce her best in this event.
Last start, the New Zealand-sired filly showed improvement when she finished fifth in a BM65, here over 1200m.
Kyle Wilson-Taylor had her settled fourth, one out, one back to the turn before crossing heels then ran home well to be in the mix but faded over the final 50m, beaten just over two lengths on the line.
In need of that last run, she draws gate five today and maps to settle mid-field or better with Martin Harley as the new pilot.
Already a winner at the Doomben track, the three-year-old should find this Class 1 a little easier and with a trouble-free run, looks a major player for the big prize in this contest.
