Flemington Blackbookers June 20 – Horses to Follow from Flemington on June 20
- Helvecchio finished strongly in debut, worth following over longer.
- Lake Vostok impressed with fastest late split on return from spell.
- Saint George eye-catching over 1620m; better suited stepping up in trip.
Racing was at Flemington on Saturday June 20 for a nine-race programme.
Here are our blackbookers and horses to follow from the action.
Race 1 - 2yo (1420m)- Helvecchio 👀 (5th)
The opener was for the two-year-olds over the 1420m and Helvecchio should take improvement off what was his debut run. The Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained galloper got off to a poor start after becoming unbalanced and settled towards the rear in the field of 14. He made up a stack of ground in the straight to finish on the heels of the placegetters, eventually placing 5th behind Fontein Jewel, beaten just over a length. Look for the son of Castelvecchio at his next couple of starts and over further ground.
Race 6 - BenchMark 90 (1420m)- Lake Vostok 👀 (7th)
It was a promising return by Lake Vostok in Race 6, which was a BenchMark 90 over the 1420m. The Luke Oliver settled last in the field of 13 and her cause wasnt helped by the slow tempo in the early to middle stages. She was resuming off a long spell with her last start coming at Flemington during th 2025 Melbourne Cup Carnival when 3rd over the 1600m on Oaks Day but she balanced up well in the straight to close off with the fastest last 200m. Second up at her last preparation she went from a 4th at Cranbourne over the 1300m to a win at Flemington over the 1600m and she was a narrow runner-up at Flemington at her previous second up run to that. She is one to keep in mind in similar company at her next start.
Race 8 - Handicap (1620m)- Saint George 👀 (4th)
Saint George was another the produced a solid return at Flemington on Saturday. The former Royal Ascot runner-up is now into his third preparation since coming over to Australia and placed 4th behind Seafall in Race 8 over the 1620m. He settled back and made up ground in the straight before just peaking on his run late in the piece. His best work has been over the 2000m since coming over, having closed out his summer preparation with two wins over that distance and is one to be on over further ground at his next couple of runs.
