Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Scone on May 17.
  • Race 2:  Fiorsum Fred
  • Race 4:  Sparkling
  • Race 5:  Gentileschi

Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?

Race 2:  Fiorsum Fred

The Fiorente gelding made an impressive return to the track on Saturday when proving too strong on fresh legs, taking out the Class 3 Highway Hcp.

Apprentice Jace McMurray was aboard and rode the ideal race, settling him mid-field after leaving the gates from barrier 11 (of 16) before securing a split in the run home where he hit the line strongly to get the job done.

He will strip fitter next start, improving even further on that effort and should be kept safe for his next few runs.

Race 4:  Sparkling

Trained by Matt Laurie at Mornington, the Victorian visitor was second-up on Saturday (after resuming at Randwick) and caught the eye with a big finish that saw her cross the line just behind the placegetters in the BM72 Hcp.

She jumped from the outside gate (12) and settled back in the field before turning for home and still sitting last, stormed home with 60kgs on her back to finish less than two lengths from victory.

The four-year-old is a winner when third-up and should find a place in your black books for future racing.

Race 5:  Gentileschi

Gained a start (after scratchings) as an emergency and took full advantage of the opportunity when finishing a close-up second on Saturday in the BM78 over 1700m.

Coming off an impressive first-up win, she drew out in gate nine and settled back in the field, caught three-wide as well.

Taking the turn via the cape, she looked 100-1 as they straightened but Andrew Adkins wound her up for a final effort where she stormed home, arriving one stride too late to claim the winner’s cheque.

The Dundeel mare has won both second and third-up previously and it appears she is now ready to produce her best.  Don’t let her get away.
