Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Randwick on 8 August.

Race 2: Class 3 Hwy Hcp (1000m) – Magic Speed

The Queanbeyan-based mare resumed on Saturday after seven months off the scene and caught the eye when finishing third in this event.

Settling back in the field, the Bon Hoffa mare was never on the track, caught three-deep from the outset to the turn, then tracked even wider where she spotted them six lengths and impressed as she crossed the line just a length from victory.

Returning back to the provincials now, the four-year-old will strip fitter and looks well worth following this campaign.

Race 6: Benchmark 88 Hcp (1000m) – Call Me Gorgeous

The David Pfieffer-trained gelding resumed on Saturday off a 12-week spell and turned heads with a big finish in this event.

Kerrin McEvoy settled him second-last, eight lengths off the speed to the turn, then inside the final 200m, he still had just one behind him when he hit top gear and stormed home to finish fourth, a whisker behind the placegetters.

Already a winner when second-up, the 1000m was a little short for him so he should be fitter now and looking for a little further from here.

Race 9: Benchmark 78 Hcp (1200m) – Mareth

First-up off a 17-week absence, the Godolphin mare was a certainty beaten on Saturday after a torrid run in this event.

Will Stanley had her settled in the back half of the field to the turn, then looking for clean air, ran into dead ends everywhere and only saw daylight inside the final 100m where she hit the line hard and arrived in time to grab the silver medal in the race.

Ten starts has now produced a win and no less than four runner-up finishes and after this effort, she looks worthwhile following for a few more yet.
