Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Rosehill on 4 July.

Race 3: Two-Year-Old Hcp (1100m) – Gatineau

The Team Hawkes-trained gelding made his racing debut on Saturday and came under notice when finishing fifth in this event.

From gate seven (of eight), Tyler Shiller eased him back at the start to settle in last place and trailed the leader by six lengths to the turn, then in the run home, weaved through traffic and made up ground and doing his best work over the final 100m, finished less than three lengths off the winner.

An impressive first start with the grey galloper already giving an indication that further ground could be his forte later on. Keep him safe for now.

Race 6: Benchmark 78 (1100m) – Columbia Blue

The Joe Pride-trained galloper resumed on Saturday after six months off the scene and impressed when finishing a close-up second in this event.

Tom Sherry settled him fourth on off the fence and trailed the two in front to the turn before tracking wide and soon after straightening, was interfered with by another runner before re-balancing, then hit the line hard only to arrive one stride too late, beaten a nose in the end.

A strong start to this campaign and unbeaten in two second-up appearances to date, lock him in as one to watch.

Race 10: Benchmark 78 (1400m) – Sir Artie

The Team Archibald-trained galloper was second-up on Saturday and caught the eye with a big finish that saw him cross the line in fifth place.

Mollie Fitzgerald settled him last, a dozen lengths from the leader to the turn before scouting wide and straightened up as the widest runner, then stormed home to finish just 1.5 lengths from the winner, finishing off better than any other in the race.

Carrying top weight and on fresh legs, the wet track also worked against the six-year-old who handled the situation well under those conditions.

Already a winner when third-up, stay with him for a few more yet.
