Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Gold Coast on 14 March.

Race 6: Aquis Jewel (2YO)  (1200m) – The Autumn Affair

The Kelly Schweida-trained filly came off a debut Maiden win to take her place in the big one here and unable to go the early pace, settled second-last a dozen lengths off the lead with Cejay Graham aboard.

On straightening, Graham kept the filly near the fence and after being checked off heels at the 300m mark, got going again and while no chance of winning, stormed home along the fence and arrived in time to grab fourth prize, unlucky not to finish closer.

A bright future looks on the cards for the daughter of The Autumn Sun so keep a spot open for her in your blackbook.

Race 9: Military Rose Plate (1200m) – Margot’s Deel

The Robert Heathcote-trained mare was fresh off a 15-week spell on Saturday and snuck home under the radar when finishing second in this event. Most eyes were on the winner (Considered) who did put in a big effort to claim victory, but the Dundeel mare’s performance stood out as she was taking ground off the winner over the final 100m of the race.

Settling back in the field, Cejay Graham had to make her own luck in the run home with a wall of horses in front her and she did well to thread her way through traffic and cross the line just half a length from glory in the end.

Already a winner when second-up, the four-year-old has now strung five-straight top-two finishes together and looks set to keep going from here so keep her safe for now.

Race 10: Gold Coast Stks (1800m) – Glory Daze

The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper was second-up on Saturday and caught the eye with a strong-finishing second in this event.

Ryan Maloney settled him back in the field and on straightening, was spotting them four lengths before making up good ground to beat all but the winner to the line, beaten just half a length on the post.

He likes the sting out of the ground and already a two-time winner when third-up, looks on-track to improve even further from here.
