Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?
Race 6: Benchmark 78 Hcp (1100m) – Off The Press
The Todd Smart-trained gelding resumed on Saturday after six months in the paddock and turned plenty of heads with his strong finish in this event.
Trapped three-wide to the turn, he then tracked even wider and chased home the eventual winner (Polyglot), finishing less than half a length for the major prize.
The main point of interest here is, the six-year-old has won three of his previous second-up appearances so it looks a wise move to be on him next start.
Race 8: The Rosebud (Listed) (1100m) – Chilly Girl
The Trapeze Artist filly won the Group 3 Widden Stakes on debut before heading to the paddock and on Saturday ,she was fresh after seven months off the scene and picked-up where she left off by taking out this Listed affair.
Tim Clark rode her a treat, having the filly box-seating on settling, then in the run home, came off the leader’s heels and gave the race favourite (Blue Door) a start and a beating, crossing the line a length clear with plenty in reserve.
The three-year-old looks a real promising type and gives the impression there will be many more victories on her resume before she is finished.
Race 9: Three-Year-Old & Upwards Hcp (1400m) – Althoff
The Chris Waller-trained gelding was second-up on Saturday and went one better when clobbered his rivals in this event.
Although enjoying a big pull in the weights, he was still impressive when coming from back in the field and finished off strongly to score by more than two lengths on the line.
He is already a winner when third-up and looks well worth following for this current preparation.
