The Everest Tips & Runner-by-Runner Preview
The Everest is not only the richest race in Australia, but it's also the most exciting. 12 of the countries best sprinters battle at Randwick for millions.
The field is packed with champion sprinters, including Nature Strip, Masked Crusader, and last year's champion Classique Legend.
We look at the form of every runner in The Everest at Randwick on Saturday.
Nature Strip
He is the class act of the field and that is reflected in betting markets. The rain has helped his chances, as he owns two wins from two starts in the heavy conditions. Distance is the worry, but he demands attention.
Classique Legend
He sprinted hard to score last year, and although his Hong Kong campaign didn't produce the goods, he could fire fresh up. Conditions aren't ideal, but never rule out a classy type.
Eduardo
He's getting better with age and that was a gutsy win over Nature Strip last start. He's another classy sprinter who wouldn't look out of place winning The Everest. Conditions aren't an issue at all, so punters are getting value odds for Eduardo again.
Gytrash
Add his name to the long list of quality runners in this field. He didn't get much luck behind runners last start, and the jockey had a handful of horse. Draws the rail in the wet, but it depends how the rail is playing come Race 7. We're expecting a tidy effort.
Trekking
Knocking on the door after back-to-back third placings, but we question his will to win. It has been a while, so we can't have him in selections.
Masked Crusader
Hit the line impressively to score last start, and despite rising in class, he is an exciting type. Conditions might not be ideal, but punters get odds better than we expected. He will sit off them and sprint late, so keep safe.
Wild Ruler
Got the job done at The Valley last time out, which was a nice effort. Meets a few nicer types in this race, and he could be looking for 1400m. We wouldn't rule him out completely, but they could go too quickly for him.
The Inferno
The former Singapore-trained runner has been good since arriving in Australia. He owns a win and a placing, so he could go to another level here. Watch the betting markets for late moves, as the early signs are positive.
Embracer
A speedy type but an interesting choice for the slot holder. Yet to show form against this level of opposition, and we're not expecting that to change.
Lost and Running
Things haven't quite gone his way this season, but he's unbeaten on a heavy track. We can't rule him out of selections, especially if he gets a good run in transit from barrier two.
Libertini
Specked at odds, but the mare hasn't raced for a while, which won't help. She likes Randwick, but we're prepared to overlook her chances.
Home Affairs
Couldn't have been more impressive against much easier company last start. Gets in with 53kg, so he has attracted bets. Wouldn't be leaving him out of selections completely.
Verdict
Nature Strip wasn't going to be our top pick, but then the rain came. He excels on rain-affected tracks, so he should be tough to beat.
Masked Crusader could be the new Chautauqua, so we're not leaving him out at generous double-figure odds.
We would also include Classique Legend and Eduardo, who are both class acts.
