Race 6: No.6 Sunlight Power
The Ricky Yiu-trained galloper is in great touch of late and down in grade here, looks a genuine winning chance in this event.
Last start, the Capitalist gelding was most impressive with his first crack at Group 1 glory when he finished a gallant third in the Champions Mile on this track.
Settling back in the field, he stuck to the fence and had plenty of cover to the turn when sticking to the fence, he was blocked for a run before finally seeing daylight and finished strongly to cross the line just half a length from victory.
He drops back to Group 3 level today and has Harry Bentley returning for the ride who boasts a strong record with the five-year-old.
He draws gate seven here and maps to settle near mid-field again with cover.
Carrying less weight, a trouble-free run can see him fighting out the finish in this contest.
Race 8: No.2 Helios Express
John Size saddles-up ‘the Express’ here who has done everything but win this preparation and with a little luck in running today, he can shake minor-money monkey off his back and crack it for a win in his first attempt at Group 3 level.
Last start, the Toronado gelding made it seven-straight minor placings when he finished third in the Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint, here over 1200m.
From the outside gate (13), Hugh Bowman eased him back to last where he remained to the turn before peeling wide and while never a winning chance, he hit the line strongly and took plenty of ground off the winner (Ka Ying Rising) and wasn’t disgraced when collecting the minor prize in the race, finishing 2.5 lengths behind a scorching time of 1:07.8 for the 1200m.
Dropping sharply in grade here, under handicap conditions he drops in weight and has Bowman steering the ship again but has to deal with the outside gate (11) again.
If the pace is genuine, a repeat of his last-start effort should see him very hard to hold out today.
Race 9: No.8 Ka Ying Attack
The David Hall-trained galloper is third-up today and recent form suggests he is a genuine winning chance in this event.
Last start, the Too Darn Hot gelding showed plenty of improvement off his first-up effort when he finished a close-up third in a Class 3 Hcp, here over 1200m.
With regular rider Matthew Poon in the saddle, he settled perfectly behind the two leaders, one off the fence and tracked them to the turn where Poon asked him for a final effort and he responded, chasing them all the way home, beaten just half a length on the line.
From gate five, he maps to settle in a similar position today with Poon in pride of place.
All the boxes are ticked here, boasting track and distance success previously and already a winner when third-up, he looks a serious contender for the main prize in this contest.
