Race 1: No.4 Joika
The locally-trained galloper returns to her home track today and ticks enough boxes to suggest she can bounce back here and claim the major prize in this event.
Last start, the Maurice mare came off back-to-back podium finishes when she finished unplaced in a Class 1 at set weights over 1880m at Newcastle.
From gate 10 of 11, Aaron Bullock settled her at the tail of the field where she remained to the turn, then in the run home, found very little and only passed one before crossing the line five lengths from the winner.
The track was rated a Good 4 that day and her resume shows five starts on dry tracks that have all ended in unplaced outcomes.
Back at home today, she draws to do no early work from gate one and maps to settle near mid-field on the fence with Bullock in the saddle again.
The track today is currently rated a Soft 7 which looks ideal for her after already securing her maiden win on a similar surface.
Given the conditions today, the four-year-old looks right in this contest.
Race 3: No.4 Street Force
The Scott Singleton-trained galloper is second-up today and looks in line for back-to-back success in this event.
Last start, the Cosmic Force mare resumed off a 15-week spell and against the odds, broke through for her first win when she took out a set weights Maiden Plate over 1250m at Gunnedah.
Drawn the outside gate (11), Mikayla Weir settled her back in the field to the turn before swinging via the cape then closer to the outside fence, she took a while to warm up but really hit the line strongly over the final 100m and arrived in time to grab the win right on the post.
Stepping-up to the 1400m today where she takes on Class 1 company, the mare has drawn ideally in gate two and maps to do little early work as she settles in the back half of the field.
Weir has the reins again and already a winner on a rain affected surface, today’s conditions look ideal and the four-year-old looks every chance of figuring in the finish of this contest.
Race 5: No.5 Magic Merlin
The Team Cavanough-trained galloper is high-flying this time in and looks a serious chance of completing the hat-trick in this event.
Last start, the Irish-sired gelding came off his maiden win at Muswellbrook when he franked that effort by clobbering his rivals in a BM58 Hcp, here over 1700m.
Carrying 60.5kgs that day, Mitchell Bell settled him mid-field to the turn before coming off heels and in the run home, finished too strong in the end and crossed the line almost two lengths clear with some to spare.
Taking on BM66 company today, he draws the outside gate (9) and maps to cross and settle back in the field with Bell steering the ship again.
Down in weight and already a winner at the track, he looks the testing material in this contest.
