Race 1: No.3 Markwell Topsort
The Joe Burges-trained galloper has been the bridesmaid in all three starts to date and gets his chance here to break through for that first win in this event.
Last start, the Tassort gelding made it a hat-trick of runner-up prizes when he beat all but one home in a 1000m Maiden Plate at Taree.
On a Heavy 8 that day, he settled second one off the fence to the turn then in the run home, took the lead but was beaten to the line by one better on the day (carrying 4kgs less in weight).
Stepping-up to 1110m today, he draws gate six and maps to settle just behind the speed with Lee Magorrian retaining the ride.
At his peak after three runs in, he looks set to claim his first victory in this contest.
Race 5: No.2 Polymer
Paul Snowden saddles-up Polymer here who is high-flying after two starts back and ticks all the boxes here that suggest he can go back-to-back in this event.
Last start, the well-bred Street Boss gelding went one better than his first-up effort when he claimed his first career win, taking out a 1200m Maiden Hcp on this track.
Carrying 60kgs on a Heavy 9 that day, he justified being sent out the white-hot $1.30 favourite by crossing the line more than two lengths clear in the end with Ben Looker aboard.
Nicely drawn in gate four here, he maps to settle in the first half-dozen with Looker in the saddle again.
Fitter for two runs back and already a track & trip winner, he looks the testing material in this contest.
Race 6: No.3 Saratoga Power
The Team Cavanough-trained galloper is on great touch this preparation and with conditions to suit, looks a serious winning chance at odds in this event.
Last start, the Written Tycoon gelding came off an unplaced effort in Open company at Wellington when he dropped back in grade and turned it all around by taking out a BM82 over 1000m at Muswellbrook.
In the small field of seven, he settled second and travelled three-wide the entire but still finished best to claim the gold medal in the race with Jasmine Urquhart-Warren aboard.
Facing Open company again here, he carries 60.5kgs today but gets the gun-run from gate one where he maps to settle better than mid-field on the fence and has Will Stanley as the new pilot for this assignment.
At his peak after four runs this time in, he is already a two-time winner at this level and looks well worth an each-way ticket in this contest.
Race 7: No.7 Ghost Walker
Having his first start for the Paul Snowden stable today, Ghost Walker has found his mojo of late and looks set to go on with it in this event.
Last start, the Ready for Victory gelding came off a BM58 when he stepped-up in grade and beat all but one home in a BM66 over 1600m at Wagga.
Box-seating on settling, Pierre Boudvillain eased him off heels on the turn, but on straightening, the leader was off and gone and conceding the winner 3.5kgs, the gelding had to settle for second prize on the day.
Placed in a recent trial on this track with Ben Looker aboard, he draws well in gate four today and maps to settle better than mid-field with Looker aboard as the new pilot.
This assignment is a little harder today, but the five-year-old has strong enough claims to have him ranked as one of the main chances in this year’s Wauchope Cup.
