Race 2: No.2 Jonson
The Team Connors-trained galloper hasn’t missed a podium finish this time in and now looks ready to break through in this event.
Last start, the New Zealand-sired gelding made it a hat-trick of top-three finishes when he beat all but one home in a 1400m Maiden Hcp at Hawkesbury.
Drawn the outside gate (9), he settled back in the field and was trapped three-deep to the turn before working into the race and tracking even wider on straightening, he finished strongly but was out-bobbed on the line, finishing an unlucky second on the day.
Finally, he draws a gate here and jumps from barrier three and maps to settle near the speed with regular rider Deanne Panya in the saddle again for this assignment.
The step-up to the mile trip looks ideal for him now and at his peak after three runs back, he will take beating in this contest.
Race 5: No.1 Squeezebox
The Kim Waugh-trained galloper is third-up today and looks well placed for back-to-back success in this event.
Last start, the Epaulette gelding improved greatly off his first-up effort when he took out a Class 1 Hcp over 1400m on the Illawarra circuit at Kembla Grange.
Settling just behind the speed, Keagan Latham worked him into the race on the turn and in the run home, showed a tower of fighting spirit to reach the line by the barest of margins and take home the gold medal for the race.
Drawn in gate six today, he maps to settle better than mid-field with Latham in the saddle again and already a winner when third-up, a clear run to the line should see him there at the finish of this contest.
Race 6: No.4 Luskintyre
Ron Quinton saddles-up Luskintyre here who is second-up and looks set for big improvement in this event.
Last start, the well-bred Capitalist filly resumed after more than seven months off the scene and in need of the run, wasn’t disgraced when finishing fourth in a Class 1 Hcp over 1000m at Kembla Grange.
Beaten for early speed, he settled back in the field on the fence to the turn, then sticking to the inside, ran home solidly without being pushed and did well to beat half the field home in the end.
Stepping-up to the 1100m today, he draws gate six and maps to settle near mid-field with cover as Louise Day returns for the ride (having steered him to victory three starts back at Newcastle).
Fitter for that first-up run, he meets Cass 1 company again and a trouble-free run can see him figure in the finish of this contest.
Race 7: No.8 Starinion
Third-up today, the Steve Sampson-trained galloper is already back to his best and looks set to go on with it in this event.
Last start, the Stratum Star gelding benefited from a first-up run when he easily accounted for a Class 2 Hcp over 1280m on the synthetic track at Canberra.
Ridden a treat by Damon Budler, he settled two pairs back one off the fence to the turn before coming off heels and in the run home, gathered in all ahead of him and went on to score by more than a length on the line.
Drawn well in gate five today, he maps to settle in the first half dozen with Rebecca Bronett Prag back to ride, looking for her second win on the five-year-old.
Already a winner when third-up and fitter for those two runs back, if he is up near the front runners on the turn, he should prove hard to hold out in this contest.
