Race 4: No.3 Gus The Great
The Joe Pride-trained galloper resumes off a six-month absence here and looks set to strike on fresh legs in this event.
Last start, the Irish-sired gelding ended his last campaign by beating all but one home in a Warwick Farm Maiden over 1400m.
Chad Schofield settled him fourth one off the fence to the turn before coming off heels and turning for home as the widest runner, he hit the line well, arriving in time to claim the silver medal in the race.
Off the scene for six months, he has trialled twice since returning to work, winning his last at Warwick Farm.
Schofield calls the shots again and from gate nine, he maps to cross and settle near mid-field and with a clear run to the line, he can figure in the finish of this contest.
Race 5: No.2 Spartus
Fabio Martino saddles-up Spartus here who is in good touch of late and looks every chance of going back-to-back in this event.
Last start, the Capitalist gelding bounced back off a failed effort in metro-class company when he took out a BM64 Hcp over 1000m at Wyong.
From gate one, he was slowly away but recovered to be box-seating by the half-way mark, then came off the leader’s heels on straightening and in the run home, did best to claim victory on the line with Jean Van Overmeire in the saddle.
This BM68 doesn’t look any harder where he draws nicely in gate three and maps to do no early work as he settles in the back half of the field with Van Overmeire in the saddle again.
Facing country-class competition again, he looks in the mix to claim another victory in this contest.
Race 8: No.6 You’re The Choice
The Brad Widdup-trained galloper is second-up here and ticks enough boxes that suggest she can go one better in this event.
Last start, the Farnan mare resumed after 18 weeks off the scene and impressed when she beat all but one to the line BM64 Hcp over 1200m at Canterbury.
From a wide draw, she settled back in the field after missing the jump, then railing like a greyhound, turned for home and weaving through traffic, ran home strongly and despite losing a plate in the run, still managed to grab second prize, beaten just half a length on the line.
Meeting similar company here, from gate six, she maps to settle better than mid-field with cover and has Chad Schofield remaining aboard for this assignment.
Already a track and distance winner here, the four-year-old looks the testing material in this contest.
