The Caulfield Cup is the first of the Melbourne spring majors and pits the middle distance gallopers up against one another in the famous Handicap over the 2400m, which will be run on October 19.
- Berkshire Breeze
- Don Diego De Vega
- Muramasa
The Annabel Neasham-trained Fawkner Park is favourite in early markets with BoomBet at the $10 quote, while the promising new season four-year-olds, Riff Rocket and Warmonger, are on the next line.
Sea What I See, Berkshire Breeze, Circle Of Fire and Orchestral are other leading contenders.
Here are our top three long range predictions for the Caulfield Cup.
Berkshire Breeze
Berkshire Breeze shapes as the perfect Caulfield Cup candidate. He should receive a light weight for the time-honoured Handicap and produced some excellent performances in the Melbourne winter, winning three on the trot, including the Banjo Patterson Series Final (2600m) at Flemington by five lengths, going a very healthy 14.2 lengths faster than standard benchmark, indicating that he is the real deal. He will be set for a tilt at the Cups and just hoping that the stable don’t bypass the Caulfield Cup in favour of races such as the Bart Cummings and The Archer.
Don Diego De Vega
Don Diego De Vega ticks a few boxes in terms of forecasting some long range Caulfield Cup predictions. The Anabel Neasham import performed well over longer distances in Europe then was sent to Australia for a couple of runs in Sydney during the winter, claiming a BenchMark 78 over the 1800m ahead of The Englishman, which saw him firm for the Caulfield Cup. He came from well back to run within a length of Bear On The Loose at his local debut before sitting handy with the 61kg at Randwick after that. The son of Lope De Vega looks to have adapted well to Australian racing conditions and is being freshened up with races such as the Newcastle Cup (2350m), the Metropolitan (2400m) and the Caulfield Cup (2400m) on the radar.
Muramasa
Muramasa is one that represents a bit of value in early markets. The Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained galloper had an impressive spring that saw him claim victory at Caulfield in a strong edition of the Coongy Cup (2000m) before showing some fighting tenacity to claim the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) at Flemington. He had a two start autumn campaign to keep the fitness levels up and failed to fire in two runs but is clearly being saved for a spring assault. The four-year-old produced some slick figures in his two runs last spring and if the son of Deep Impact can get anywhere near those performances, he is a clear lightweight contender in the Caulfield Cup.
