Caulfield Cup 2024 Betting Tips - 3 long range predictions for the Caulfield Cup
- Our best long range selections for the Caulfield Cup:
- The 2024 Caulfield Cup will be run on October 19
- Top long-range bets: Young Werther, Warmonger, Muramasa
- Focused picks based on 2023 and 2024 performances and staying ability.
The Caulfield Cup is the first of the Melbourne spring majors and pits the middle distance gallopers up against one another in the famous Handicap over the 2400m, which will be run on October 19.
- Young Werther
- Warmonger
- Muramasa
Buckaroo is now favourite for the time-honoured Handicap after claiming the Underwood Stakes (1800m) and finishing runner-up in the Turnbull Stakes (2000m), ahead of Eliyass and the Metropolitan (2400m) winner, Land Legend.
Here are our top three long range predictions for the Caulfield Cup.
Young Werther
Young Werther has been around for a while but is racing as well as ever, producing some excellent figures when resuming with a win over the 2000m at Caulfield before sticking on strongly for 5th behind Via Sistina in the Turnbull Stakes, beaten just over two lengths. The seasoned galloper did alot of the early work in that race and was a sitting duck over the long straight at Flemington but was able to stick on well. He drops to 52.5kg and is racing like he wants the 2400m. Ran 8th in this race behind Incentivise in 2021 but has the maturity and miles in the tank to go alot closer.
Warmonger
Warmonger was a tad disappointing when 11th in the Turnbull Stakes but I wouldn't mind seeing the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained galloper back on a Good track, while it is hard to ignore his form at 2400m. The four-year-old was runner-up in the South Australian Derby (2400m) after being posted extremely wide the trip before taking out the Queensland Derby (2400m) by a whopping 10-length margin. I expect him to be an improver and the odds on offer are very tempting.
Muramasa
Muramasa is one that represents a bit of value. The Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained galloper had an impressive spring in 2023 that saw him claim victory at Caulfield in a strong edition of the Coongy Cup (2000m) before showing some fighting tenacity to claim the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) at Flemington. He had a two start autumn campaign to keep the fitness levels up and failed to fire in two runs but is clearly being saved for a spring assault. He has been solid in his two runs this time in over shorter trips with placings behind Pericles and Berkeley Square and is a clear lightweight contender in the Caulfield Cup.
